Book Description

December 1, 1997
Serenity Makepeace knows a lot about whole-grain bread, but she doesn't know beans about business. She's expanding her natural foods emporium to sell local handicrafts by mail -- which she hopes will benefit her offbeat artist community in Witt's End, Washington. But she needs a crack financial adviser to make her dream a reality -- so she charms her way into the office of Caleb Ventress, a handsome wolf in conservative clothing.

An expert in the art of the deal, Caleb isn't sure what to make of the unconventional Serenity -- but there's no doubt he's attracted. A pass from a paragon of conformity -- even one as handsome as Caleb -- is more than free-spirited Serenity bargained for. But when a lethal blackmailer threatens her plans and perhaps her life, she puts her whole trust in the man who seems her complete opposite -- and the net result might be true love.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The interplay of colorful characters adds pizzazz to a drab mystery in this romance between business consultant Caleb Ventress and his newest client, Serenity Makepeace, who is expanding her grocery store in the artists' community of Witt's End, Wash., into a mail-order business. When the forthright Serenity tells Caleb that a blackmailer plans to publish nude photos of her unless she terminates her deal with Caleb, she is astonished by the intensity of his anger--but then she doesn't know about the old blackmail scandal involving his deceased parents. Serenity visits Ambrose Asterley, the local artist who shot the photos, but she finds him dead at the foot of his basement stairs. For far too much of this story, Caleb and Serenity putter along, assuming Ambrose was the blackmailer, his death solitary and accidental--ideas the reader won't buy for a minute. But meanwhile, Krentz ( Wildest Hearts ) conjures up a charming relationship between dissimilar but compatible lovers and whimsically paints the eccentric characters of Witt's End, where everyone is a close friend and people are judged by their auras. Taking a cue from the benevolent Serenity, Krentz's fans will delight in what she does well and forgive the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a great read - a great re-read!, January 26, 2000
This review is from: Hidden Talents (Paperback)
Yes, I have read this book several times. It is just as good the fourth time as the first. If you like your books with strong male and female characters, you will like Jayne Krentz. Serenity is not like many female characters I have read, she is gentle but strong, caring and loyal. I love her uniqueness and her 'alternative' lifestyle. Caleb is a man who never really knew if he was loved and does not really believe it exists. The two meet amidst a murder mystery which they try to solve as well as putting their own lives back together. What a great couple. And I loved the secondary characters! I think you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of her best, August 31, 1998
This review is from: Hidden Talents (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read every book Jayne Ann Krentz has ever written--several times--and this is one of her best. She does strange and unusual characters especially well, and this book abounds with REALLY strange ones. But they are all endearing, even the strangest of them turn out to have their strong points, and the characters grow and change over the course of the novel. This one will make you laugh. It may also make you cry--just a little. Definitely a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Jayne Ann Krentz's bests!, December 3, 2000

This review is from: Hidden Talents (Mass Market Paperback)
I truly enjoy Ms. Krentz's books, and Hidden Talents is one of my favorites. The character development is great, the chemistry between Serenity and Caleb is wonderful, and who can resist the quirky, off-beat inhabitants of Witt's End? Pick this one up and see if you can find a bottle of "Ole Hogwash" (a Witt's End product) to drink while you read. Enjoy!ps - If you enjoyed this one, be sure to try Absolutely Positively, Trust Me and Deep Waters. You won't be disappointed!
