5.0 out of 5 stars One of Gary Gygax's TOP SIX MODULE ADVENTURES, March 24, 2001

This review is from: Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Module C1) (Paperback)
To fit my criteria for top six, the adventure needs to be more than hack and slash. It must encompass problem solving, some mystery and role playing.

The latter element is weak in this module as it's a tomb.

Still, there's a lot of room for problem solving and, yes, some hack and slash. There's also an exotic flair to it as the module is based on Meso American culture so it's not the typical western european dungeon module.

Oh, did I forget that there's something that's close to being a Demigod in this module? Well, suppossedly. :) There are also about six to nine neat tricks or traps for the players.

Can run also as a tournament where the group has been given a poisonous herb by the angry Aztec like ruler and they have a set amount of time to escape from the tomb.

BRILLIANT! Would highly recommend with restrictions listed above.

BTW, the other top five modules by Gary Gygax are: VILLAGE OF HOMMLET, QUEEN OF THE SPIDERS,EXPEDITION TO THE BARRIER PEAKS, TOMB OF HORRORS and Lost Caverns of Tsojanth

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, February 14, 2006
This review is from: Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Module C1) (Paperback)
Similar to the classic Tomb of Horrors module, Tamoachan has a seperate book of art by classic TSR artists such as Erol Otus, Jeff Dee, Darlene, and others. Nice.

The Monochrome is the 1980 version. The color cover version -- essentially identical inside -- was released in 1982. (There's also an ultra-rare 1st edition called "Lost Tamoachan" (1979), with less than 500 copies released.)

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the first "exotic locale" adventures, well-scripted, April 29, 2000
This review is from: Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Module C1) (Paperback)
Do your players ever brag about their skills? Well, there's two REAL ways to test their mettle - you can either send them into the Tomb of Horrors (and kill them off), or you can set aside a few nights from the campaign and play this classic module, the first competition adventure ever made. They'll probably still die, but hey, at least they're not playing their usual characters... ;) This one features an amazingly researched Aztec/Mayan culture, devious puzzles, horrifically difficult encounters, and a unique scoring system for the adventure's end. Your players will truly be proud of themselves for years if they score highly here!
