4 1/2 stars: I'm not usually thrilled with pianoless trios, but this recording is a notable exception. Smulyan soloes effortlessly. Each player has room to stretch out and the trio creates a full, satisfying ensemble. Nothing new or offbeat here, just a very nice, swinging recording and great baritone playing.
