Book Description

Maryanne Torres is a compassionate nurse who fails at relationships. After a string of losers, she swears off premarital sex, hoping to land a marrying type of man.

Lucas Knight, a law-school dropout, moves to California to train for the Ironman Triathlon. He's smart, sweet, and everything Maryanne wants in a man, but their relationship suffers from his dedication to the sport. Seeking consolation in the arms of a handsome preacher's son, Maryanne attends a church party where she is raped.

Maryanne is pregnant from the rape and plans to abort. But the identity of her rapist is hidden in her baby's DNA. Lucas asks Maryanne to seek alternatives and pledges to support her through the pregnancy. When Lucas becomes the prime suspect, Maryanne must clear his name and make a life changing decision.

The rapist has other ideas. In order to destroy the evidence, he offers Maryanne an illegal offshore abortion. With Maryanne's life in danger, Lucas races to save her and her baby. However, Maryanne hides a secret that threatens to tear them apart forever.

A 99,000-word women's fiction, HIDDEN UNDER HER HEART deals with the consequences of rape and abortion.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is a wonderful love story between Maryanne and Lucas. They have so much pain between them that I do believe that they were truly were meant to be. They were each others healing stars. - My Thoughts for Thought

I also loved that Ayala made Lucas a very lovable man of color (half black, half white).  Honestly, I'm OVER the whole bad boy thing...  It's nice to have a wholesome man who we can love! - Sandling All Day

The hero, Lucas, was my favorite. He started off great and he had me rolling! He's upbeat and hilarious at opportune times, but straight forward and serious, letting his voice shine when it all boils down to his compassion for life. - Finding Forever in Romance

you become a character in her book. You live the adventure, the romance, the thrill, the mystery. Putting the book down is literally impossible until you've finished it, because it becomes your life. - Mom's Thumb Reviews

The book takes you on a journey through a new romance plagued with unfortunate circumstances,   It tears at your heart, and manages to also lift you up. - Domesticated Breakdown

The issue is covered from both sides of the table regarding abortion and I thank the author for that. There are a lot of one sided novels out there, that do not touch on the real emotion that a woman is feeling when trying to make this decision and fighting with herself from the inside. - Manic Mama of 2

This book is a book about choices. The choices we make, and those made for us. - Thoughts of a Mother, Wife, and Daughter

Best described as an emotional, fast-paced rollercoaster ride that is sure to grip and tear hearts of all who read it. - Hearts and Hands More Than Full

5.0 out of 5 stars An Emotional Roller Coaster Ride January 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hidden Under Her Heart is a story by Rachelle Ayala that takes the reader up and down the emotional scales in the lives of Maryanne and Lucas. From their first meeting, the ride begins when Lucas plays a ridiculously immature prank on Maryanne who's on duty in her job as a nurse. Maryanne is equally immature in her vow to remain celibate until she finds the right man, but then when she and Lucas go on their first date, she teases, flirts, and makes it seem as if she'd like more. As the story moves forward, the reader learns that all she wants is to be loved.

As the book proceeds, choices are made by both of them, forcing them to grow up and face their demons.

I admit I wasn't sure I'd like this book because of its pro-life bent, but I decided to give it a chance because I'd read other books by Ms. Ayala that I enjoyed, and the premise also sounded interesting. As a pro-choice woman, I found the book an interesting study of the choices we make when life hands us rotten eggs.

The author does not shout her beliefs, which allowed me to continue the story. She merely shows through her characters that when it comes to pregnancy, adoption, abortion, and parenthood, consequences ensue so those choices must be made with extreme consideration.

Subtle religious overtones emerge throughout the book; yet again, there was no shouting. I'm a spiritualist, open to many religions even though I was raised as a Christian. The religious aspects of this book only confirmed my belief that faith in God sees us through the brightest and the darkest hours.

I give Hidden Under Her Heart five stars for its honesty. I also give Ms. Ayala five stars for her bravery in writing a story on a controversial subject in such a thoughtful and considerate way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, thought provoking January 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book! I have been following Rachelle Ayala and reading everything she writes and in my opinion this is her best work yet.

First off, I really like Lucas. He has his flaws and is perhaps a bit extreme in some of his views, but deep down he is a loving, caring man who was someone I could really relate to and admire. He stands by his convictions and tries to do the right thing. My favorite part about Lucas was the growth his character took in the book. Maryanne is also a realistic character. Even though her opinions are at the different end of the spectrum from mine, I could feel her turmoil and enjoyed her journey and watching her conflicts. The cast of supporting characters was enjoyable too, complete with difficult family members and friends who sometimes caused more harm than help.

For me, this book was pretty intense and I read it in just 2 evenings because I had to find out what happened. This story touched me and also made me really think about my opinions on abortion and why I feel the way I do. Overall, the romance between Maryanne and Lucas was satisfying and the action parts were exciting and fun to read. This one is a hit, and my favorite book of Ayala's so far. Looking forward to more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was ok March 1, 2013

I some what enjoyed the book. I understood the central theme of the book and about how abortions are hard on both people. And the after effects. However as an avid reader, this book was too long and drawn out. I really did not need about every conversation and the story line, to me, made the characters unbelievable. He seemed to good to be true and she seemed just bent on being destructive with her relationship the young man. Although they both had flaws it was just too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Under Her Heart March 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The physical attraction between Maryanne and Lucas was so tangible I felt every moment of their very troubled relationship. Ayala deals with the most controversial topics from rape, abortion and modern technology in a very insightful way. Maryanne must learn hot, sexy men aren't necessarily out to hurt her and that sometimes bets are meant to be lost. Lucas must learn that work isn't everything and also how to deal with the intentional and sometimes unintentional emotional upheavels in a woman's life. I am so glad I took time out of my busy schedule to read Hidden Under Her Heart. Ayala is a top-notch writer and I really enjoy her entertaining, page turning novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Under Her Heart March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Hidden Under Her Heart is a book about choices. The choices we make, and those made for us due to circumstance. In the book, we follow Maryanne as she is attempting to make changes in her life. She wants to move from her life of bad choices in men and sex, to a life where she has a man committed to her and to marriage. She decides to abstain from sex and focus on other things. She starts to date a man named Lucas, who could be that man. One night after a fight with Lucas, she finds herself at a party at a local church, and drinking. That night she is raped. Her boyfriend is accused, and she has to go about clearing his name. They go through many trials as they work to find the truth. Maryanne considers abortion feeling because of her past it would be the best. Lucas is dead set against abortion and works at trying to change her mind. There is trouble following them both as they try and figure out who the father is, and how to prove Lucas is not the rapist. As we follow their journey together and as individuals, we watch them learn about loving themselves and forgiveness.
Although abortion is at the center of the book, I feel the story was, as a whole, more about forgiveness and a search for truth. Through characters who show up at the right time, we learn about courage and strength. We find the sole truth to be that of Christ dying for our sins. We learn how God can use any situation to bring us to him and there is where truth is. We see that even when situations seem hopeless, he is there and will see us through. Although to me the story started out a little slow, the more I read the more I realized I was wrong. It was a heartwarming plot, good truth and a good look at how our choices affect our lives and future choices. A very good read!
