Product Description

With every new album from The Birthday Massacre, we see a band that has created not only its own distinct niche in the musical landscape, but also seems to have created its own world. This time, we play Hide and Seek in that world. The new album from The Birthday Massacre opens with rain, and ends with the sounds of waves; in between we are given songs of lost girls, lost love, lost time. The delicate interplay between Chibis vocals and the ambiance created by Rainbow, M. Falcore, Rhim, Owen & Nate is on full display. Dark new wave hooks and haunting synths turn sinister as Rainbow and Falcores guitars lead Hide and Seek into ever darker, ever more beautiful corners of The Birthday Massacres world. The Hide and Seek vinyl is pressed in 180-gram vinyl, includes a digital download card for the album inside the sleeve, and is limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

Review

A velvety voice, crashing guitars, awesome bass line, haunting vocals & keys, and melodic gothic rock performed to perfection. --Muen Magazine

Dark, moody, complex, and melodic; but also fun and infectious. It is creepy yet curious. It is sad, endearing, and a fitting chapter in their ongoing gothic fairytale. --Coma Music Magazine

I was so psyched for this album that I bought it on mp3 right when it was available. Does Birthday Massacre ever make a weak album? Not a chance, I love the style they've put together over the course of there albums. The Deep Grindy rock guitars, echoey lead guitars, deep bass, Powerful drumming & Gothic Fantasy synthesizer sounds. Oh yea and one of the greatest female rock singers ever... Chibi. If the mainstream had a clue Birthday Massacre would be all over the radio, not sure if that'd be good or not, because often the best music is made by people who struggle with the rest of us. Speaking of that make sure to buy this, they aren't rolling in dough, support them so they can keep making incredible music!

About the album: I'm positive it's going to grow on me like crazy because the last 3 they've done have, but as far as first impressions it's catchy as hell, there back doing what they do best great Industrial Rock that's not afraid of a hook (or whatever genre you choose to call them). If you dig them you might also like these bands: The Stolen Babies, The Devin Townsend Project, Covered in Spiders, Zombina and the Skeletones, KMFDM & Blush Response. Enjoy, and tell your friends about The Birthday Massacre, word of mouth is a powerful tool for an underground band. I mention this because they've put out powerful music that's kept me rocking for countless hours, I want them to succeed, I want the best for them, because they are the best!

...it still has some instant classics like Leaving Tonight, Play With Fire, and The Long Way Home, that stand tall along with their best material.

I usually write a long in-depth review of new Birthday Massacre albums, but at this point in the future we are all familiar with their now trademarked sound. This band is the epitome of what a successful underground act is capable of.

So why is the album not as good as the others? For one, the guitars are increasingly harder and louder, pushing the record into pop metal territory, which I am not a fan off at all. Same with the aggressive vocals. I love this band for their soft haunting melodies and synth lines. The guitars were always a nice compliment to those qualities, but here its a bit obnoxious.

That, and the hooks on this album are fewer and farther between. This is bound to happen with any group that maintains a certain sound for as long as TBM have now. It makes me wonder what they will do with their sound next.

Not a good starting point for new fans, but long term fans like myself have already purchased the album because almost half of the album deserves to be heard on a regular basis.

Thats the best way I can described Hide & Seek. A bit of a step back, but still contains a few tracks that are essential cuts in your Birthday Massacre collection.

Cheers.

There really isn't a "bad" song on the album, BUT...

* 35 minutes is not long enough to call this a "full length album"

* You would never know there were THREE guitarists in the band from this release (unless two of them were on vacation when it was recorded)

* One heavy song (track 2) isn't enough to diversify from the slow to mid tempo songs that populate the rest of the album

Summary: This is TBM's shortest, most synth-driven (nearly guitarless) album ever and it lacks the diversity of their previous releases. While there is not a bad track to be found, there aren't many songs that really blew me away. A decent release, but I believe TMB can do better than this.

The Birthday Massacre have a talent for consistently delivering albums that maintain their unique Goth/Rock sound and moody songs but, yet keeping the material fresh and giving each song it's own identity. From the haunting and soulful like Playing With Fire (my favorite song on this CD), Cover My Eyes and The Long Way Home to the upbeat like Leaving Tonight, the danceable like Need and the harder rocking Down, each song from lyrics to music are composed and mixed to perfection. Each song achieves what it sets out to. Whether it's the perfect blend of the moody and melodic synthesizers and guitar to the strong beat of the rhythm, each song is mixed to maximum effect. And let's not forget lead singer Chibi. Her vocals suit each song perfectly and she goes from melodic and haunting to a fierce growl in a heartbeat and always knows which vocal style fits what song and lyric. This band is tight and their live performances show that it's the band not the mixing that holds the talent. And this band is filled with talent.

I pre ordered this on vinyl and was really looking forward to it. While i do really like it, I dont feel that it is as good as either Pins and Needles or Violet. For reference, Pins and Needles is my favorite, so if you dont agree, you can probably skip the rest of this review. I really liked the heavier edge that album had.
I would consider Hide and Seek thier 3rd best effort Pins and Needles and Violet. I feel some of the songs sound like they were just written on a DAW without input from the entire band. Some of the sequencing seems uninspired. On One Promise, I feel the song is well written, but in the wrong key. To me, it makes Chib's voice sound a little whiney which could have been avoided. She has such a great voice, it almost seems wasted here. Other songs dont seem to be as strong lyrically as some of thier previous efforts.
Having said all that, there are some really great tracks on this album. I love the opening track Leaving Tonight as well as Down. Both are wonderful both musically and lyrically. Calling is also a good song with a great hook that you will find yourself singing along with in no time.
All in all I like the record and still have it playing non stop in my car. Also looking forward to seeing them finally as they are coming within 100 miles of where I live on this tour.
