Maybe the best ever Sanborn album!,

I remember when I first heard this album back in 1980. It was at a college party and I was struck immediately by the tone and style of this incredible saxophonist. From the opening notes of the first cut "Hideaway" I was hooked. Sanborn plays three horns in this song and it is smokin' ! I sat by a speaker and listened to every note. It was the beginning of my introduction to Contemporary Jazz and a whole new world of music for me. Not since King Curtis have I heard such an expressive sax. You can feel the emotion in every song. This is the album to buy if you want to hear Sanborn at his best. I also recommend Voyeur and Straight to the Heart.

David Sanborn at his absolute best,

I've been listening to David Sanborn since the late 70s, and I'm a huge fan of his. I have lots of his albums, but this is the one I keep coming back to. It is truely Sanborn at his best. It showcases his range of styles, from the title track, to Creeper, to The Seduction. I miss listening to this one on vinyl, because The Seduction is the last track on that side, and it gives you a chance to just soak up the memory of the song in silence after it's over - followed by "I gotta hear that again". The whole album is filled with the signature Sanborn style that has made him the super-star he is. If you've never listened to David Sanborn before (and you have, whether you know it or not), this is the album to start your collection with.

Highly recommended if u want to hear some more Sanborn in your neighborhood. I definitely appreciate it you won't be disappointed! This is a high standard 4 Sanborn. It incls. the love song "The Seduction" from the movie "American Gigolo" (which I seen twice but I have the soundtrack to it). David Sanborn should have won a Grammy 4 this one if he created this album.

I normally do not love "smooth jazz" and I'm what you would call a "purist" but this album is an exception. Perhaps it is because I became acquainted with this album as a child or maybe it's perhaps the music is just plain good. Whatever the reason, I dare you to find a more melodic, graceful and romantic piece of music than that of Carly's Song, obviously written for Carly Simon. I have 3 particular favorite cuts on this album but virtually every song is good. It's a throwback sound, of course, and you'll instantly recognize it came from the late 1970's, early 80's upon hearing the opening title cut of Hideaway (in fact, Hideaway came out in 1980). But the music doesn't sound dated. It remains fresh and alive, even to this day.

I have recently found a wealth of smooth jazz artists on this site. David Sanborn is one of my favorites. Very seldom have I found a cd from him that I didn't like.

Sanborn Doing It Again And Again!,

In terms of music 1980 turned out to be a watershed year for David Sanborn. This album began a long string of albums that would extend up to the end of the decade and establish him as a world class talent second only in sound to his main inspiration Hank Crawford. Perhaps because of his well earned respect among musicians of the day there's little doubt as to why this album in particular had so much effort and inspiration put into it. While definately in the pop jazz genre generally this album isn't even as polished or mellow as even the strong albums put out in the next few years would be. It's certainly very slick and produced but it's Sanborn's show and as much effort as possible is made to make sure his musical abilities are showcase to their optimum strengh. The opening title song probably has a lot to do with that. With masters Steve Gadd and Hiram Bullock leading the way with Sanborn the song grooves with an intense level of soulful funk with a rocking beat here and again along with Sanborn's alternalely cool and explosive lead solos. He's right back on it with "Anything You Want" and even offers up more urbane sophistifunk tunes such as "Lisa" and Michael McDonald's closer "Again An Again" both are strong showcase for Sanborn's enraptured style of playing. Of course he also has a way with those soulful midtempo jams such as "Carley's Song",a cover of "The Seduction (Love Them)" and "If You Would Be Mine" which all allow Sanborn and the great assemblage of talent with him to solo with grit, intelligence and intensity without every resorting to being corney or outdated. Of course one of the major highlites of this album is the incredibly well performed jam "Creeper",an almost updated Herbie Hancock/Headhunters era number not only helped along by Sanborn's playing but by the great stop/start drumming and the equally effective bass synth riffing. An album endowed with both spirited playing, energy and composition this is certainly an album Sanborn can honestly be proud of and happily paved the way for what was to come in the emmediate future for him.

The album is very enjoyable, and the version of "Hideaway" on this CD is longer and a lot more fun than the version on his Greatest Hits CD. My favorite of Sanborn's is actually his Double Vision CD, which he does with Bob James.
