5.0 out of 5 stars Album Of The Year
What really gets me here is the inventive writing. Deb & Steve have once again managed to write melodies that are familiar yet totally unexpected. While their solo albums are really good, they hit their peak as a duo. This album, like their last one, is some of the most intelligent music that you can run in to. I consider myself very lucky for having "accidentally"...

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Stars: It's OK
I can't seem to say much of anything really bad about this album, but I'm also struggling to find much reason to praise it. The sound of The Weepies has a bittersweet kind of sound: laid back, folk-pop that is realxing and uplifting at the same time with a touch of nostalgic reflection. The songs are short, pleasant, poppy musical episodes, but they fail to be really...

While their solo albums are really good, they hit their peak as a duo. This album, like their last one, is some of the most intelligent music that you can run in to. I consider myself very lucky for having "accidentally" heard one of the Weepies songs on Minneapolis' "The Current" a couple of years ago and just fell in love with what they do. KEEP THE MUSIC COMING. Cheers!

Sometimes the right music comes along at just the right time. Such is the case with The Weepies' Hideaway. In a different moment I could have easily dismissed this as another heart-on-sleeve, folk-rock-lite duo singing weepy (sorry) little tunes. But something pulled me in - the timbre of the voices, the creative harmonies, the understated rhythm section, the songwriting. All that, and the sweetness - in the best sense of the word. The pleasure and confidence in these two singers singing together is palpable. And not an obligatory instrumental solo in sight!
Suffice it to say, this music is a blessed relief from all the pounding. Thank you, Steve & Deb.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great album, April 22, 2008

My wife and I are both huge fans of the Weepies. We saw them in concert and met them (very briefly) afterwards. They are very cool people.

So we'd been anticipating this album for a while. This review doesn't need to be long; if you know The Weepies music, this is more of the same, and that's a good thing. The only thing I'd add is that this album is a bit more subdued than their past work. There aren't as many upbeat songs and the music feels less "happy," which surprises me since they've had a new baby, and some professional success lately.

Still, it's awesome music. I listened to it four times throughout the first day I had it and I can tell I'll be listening to it for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars This should win something, May 3, 2008
This review is from: Hideaway (MP3 Download)
*(Note: On May 31, a friend told me that a Weepies song was featured in the Sex and the City movie.)

I accidentally discovered this duo and their songs just recently. 3 days ago to be exact via another web site.

Anyway, they were featured on that web site so I decided to just click on their page and let their music play. I didn't pay much attention at first and in fact let 2 of their songs play without giving much notice. I was doing something then.

Then I heard their song "Wish I Could Forget." And well, it hardly had that effect. In fact, I finally noticed their song, played it again, and again, and again. I liked their sound - the blending, as well as the lyrics and harmony of their songs.

I don't know how to describe their music. Pop, country, folk, rock, alternative. It just has this nice sound and in fact, though the words of some songs are about tough love, the songs can be very uplifting, inspiring, or make you just want to learn the lyrics to sing-along.

I'd say most of their songs can actually be music background for a good romance comedy movie or a light drama.

Usually, albums stink and one or two singles stand out. In their album, good music abounds. I actually liked 70% of their music. And I was not forcing myself to like all their songs. They just appealed to me very much.

Among the songs that are really good (and not just good - but really good and nice) are the following:

Orbiting
Wish I Could Forget
All Good Things
How You Survived the War
Can't Go Back Now
Just Blue
Hideaway
Antartica
All This Beauty

That's already 9 songs.

Anyway - I think their music will appeal to many people who want something refreshing, melodic, and contemporary.

They certainly deserve to win some big award this year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic and Chill Equals Amazing, July 9, 2008
This review is from: Hideaway (Audio CD)
First of all, I love The Weepies. This album is another brilliant addition to their discography. If you're looking for something to just relax to, then this is it. The best thing is these lyrics actually have meaning behind them unlike the tunes commonly heard on the radio. It's so refreshing to hear such unique lyrics pertaining to life and not just love/sex like more popular artists. I think The Weepies album "Say I Am You" was more of a hit for me personally, but this one "Hideaway" is also very good. My favorite songs on this album are: Hideaway, Antarctica, Old Coyote, and Just Blue.

I am a huge fan of the Weepies and I have never seen them in concert, but hopefully that will change soon. I like this CD just as much as the previous two! I preordered one through iTunes and you get an amazing acoustic track of "Hidaway", the title track. It is a shame that is not on the CD. I don't think I have EVER loved a female voice as much as I like Deb Talan's voice. It is so mesmerizing and intoxicating! Wow, in addition to that she is so georgeous too! (sorry Steve) Get this CD, you won't regret it. Can't wait to see them on the upcoming tour. Hopefully they will come to some location in the south.

5.0 out of 5 stars incomparable, April 4, 2011
By

This review is from: Hideaway (MP3 Download)
It's been about 10 years since I ran the entire catalog of any artist, but the Weepies are truly revolutionary and so far Hideaway is the best of their work, about half the tracks making it onto my "classics" list. A key innovation was Deb Talan's development of jazz vocal stylings to propel folk-rock concepts, producing a catchy yet intensely personal sound. The tone, timbre and range of her voice seem to change with every song - from a deeply personal crunchy mumble to solid soaring synthesizer-like arias, usually sung in a thoroughly idiomatic contemporary American dialect. Her voice can flutter like a nervous woodland butterfly or swoop and soar like a seagull, always perfectly in tune and timbre and in harmony with the momentary musical phrase. Combined with Steve Tannen and company's dense harmonies and inspired conceptual musical virtuosity, the result is a unique fusion of folk and pop of incomparable sophistication. The music and lyrics seem to be intimately integrated, each growing out of the other. Strangely a Weepies tune can be as catchy as any pop standard, yet too complex to recall. The promise of the Sixties was that musicians could create their best music by working together, but cultural and political conflicts always worked against them. The music of the Weepies not only sounds different, but seems to come from a different time and place, maybe the future? One can only hope!

I never write huge wordy reviews. In this case the listeners need to sample and buy and make their own judgements. But with the WEEPIES and the CD HIDEAWAY, its easy, you are going to love it. Fantastic songs by a solid outstanding duo. RECOMMENDED.
