Book Description

September 1, 2002 8 and up
In a moment of madness, Jeremy Holland's parents were killed by a gunman in a Seattle mall. Now he faces a new life with his uncle Ed, a man with a vastly different lifestyle from the one Jeremy is used to.

As he sits on the train hurtling toward Chicago, he can barely believe the terrible truth. He has no mother, no father, no home. Suddenly the impossible happens -- again -- as the train crashes in a blaze of fire, twisted metal, and screaming people. Jeremy staggers off, wandering aimlessly.

He finds a deserted cabin in the woods, which seems to be just waiting for him. He thinks he can hide out and escape form the grief of his past and his future with his uncle. Instead, Jeremy faces more danger than he bargained for when he discovers evidence of bear poachers. When he hears gun shot at night, Jeremy decides to leave his refuge and put his own life at stake in a desperate race to unmask the villains and save the bears.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-A lot happens to Jeremy Holland, 13, in this fast-paced novel. First, his parents are gunned down in a random act of violence. Then, he survives a grisly train wreck on his way out of his home city of Seattle to live with his rich uncle in Chicago. Shocked and frightened, Jeremy flees the accident scene and finds himself alone in the forest. A gift from a fellow passenger enables him to buy food, and an empty cabin in the woods provides shelter. The boy considers this lifestyle as a way to escape life with his uncle, but soon encounters far more dangerous creatures than he bargained for. When he hears a shot and discovers the mutilated body of a bear, his life is at stake. Kehret's novel will certainly keep young readers turning the pages; it is easy to read and suspenseful. The background information in the first few pages lacks the action and dialogue needed to plunge readers into Jeremy's situation, but the scenes later on will grab even reluctant readers' attention. The antihunting message creates some preachy dialogue from a girl who befriends Jeremy, but much of the research the two characters do helps readers learn more, too. More sophisticated readers may be disappointed that Jeremy's grief and healing aren't developed more, and may find the conclusion a little facile. As a suspenseful and quick-reading adventure story, though, the book succeeds.

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. Jeremy's parents are dead. Now, he must leave everything he has ever known to live with his well-meaning but busy uncle, whose moneyed lifestyle is the opposite of the modest, proactive way Jeremy's parents' lived. When Jeremy's train derails, he sees a chance to escape, and when he happens upon an unoccupied cabin in the woods, he decides to stay and think things through. He's barely settled before he discovers there are cruel bear poachers about, and in unmasking the villains, he puts himself and a new friend at risk. Careful readers, especially those familiar with Kehret's previous thriller-mysteries, will find this a bit off the mark, with too many coincidences. The fast pace and the appeal of a kid making choices are what children will most enjoy. Stephanie Zvirin

More About the Author

I've published 45 books; all but two are for children. I wrote magazine articles, short stories, and plays for many years before I discovered that what I like best is to write books for kids.
When I was twelve, I was paralyzed with polio. I made almost a full recovery but I remember that time of my life so clearly that it's easy for me to write from the viewpoint of a twelve or thirteen-year-old.
I'm always thrilled when one of my books wins a state young reader award, because I know those awards are voted on by children.
I am a widow who was married for 48 years. I have two grown children and four grandchildren. I live on a small wildlife sanctuary near Mt. Rainier National Park and I often have deer and elk in my yard.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Hideout (Paperback)
"How about some pizza," was the last thing Jeremy said to his parents before they got shot in a Seattle mall, before the train crash and before the Hideout. Jeremy is trying to survive with the stuff that he already had. You never know if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time.
One thing that I think Peg did well was describe what was happening like when the train crashed she didn't just say "Jeremy's train crashed and there's no hope for his life." She said that there was blood and steel every where. Another thing that Peg did really well was make me picture what was happening in the book like when Jeremy found the hideout.
At the end of the book Jeremy goes for a walk and finds a local store and he meets a girl and her mother and soon enough he gets to know them better and can tell them his story so they can help him as much as they can.

The Hideout

By: Peg Kehret

The main character in the book is Jeremy Holland. He's a 13 year old boy with a best friend named Paul. He has a nice house in Seattle and lives with his parents.

Jeremy Holland's parents die in a tragic accident in a mall getting shot by a gunman being the first in his site. So he has to stay in Chicago with his closest relative uncle Ed. He took a train there to see good sites on the way. Going there his train collides with another and Jeremy staggers off. With the blaze of fire and people screaming Jeremy wanders aimlessly into a forest and finds a cabin to stay in. In the middle of the night he hears a gunshot and tries to unmask the poacher who shot the bear he found in the forest. The book takes place in the middle of Seattle and Chicago in the woods and it happened throughout a month in August. I think the theme of the book is about loss, nature, bravery and fear. I loved the book because it's interesting and it has to be a pretty good book if I keep reading it. It's also thrilling and I rate the book a 5 out of 5.
