I was recently participating in a genealogy chat on Twitter, when one of the members, Nathan Dylan Goodwin, writer, got my attention. He has just released a new book called Hiding the Past - A Genealogical Crime Mystery. There are not a lot of novels out there that have a genealogical background, and also having the genealogy twist added to it! I immediately emailed the author for a copy of the book.

From the first chapter I was captivated and wanted to keep reading to find out what was to happen next. During the day I found my mind wandering to what I had read. The writer had the main character, Morton, using genealogical techniques to solve the different mysteries he encountered. I liked the way he delved into the different characters to make them come to life; sometimes I would forget I was not reading about real people and their lives. Some of the plots centered on murder, suicide, relationships, war and a deep dark family secret.

As I have read books in the past, I can usually tell almost from the beginning how it will probably end. That is not the case in this crime mystery. Each chapter, with its twists and turns, gave me new clues and had me trying to figure out the puzzle that Morton was trying to solve. The use of historical events was interwoven into the story lines.

While I do a lot of genealogical research and reading, I also like to read crime mysteries. I really enjoyed reading this book as it put both of them together in one book sprinkled with a bit of forensic genealogy. I was excited to learn the author is working on another book!

I look forward to reading more from Nathan Dylan Goodwin and recommend this book as an exciting suspenseful read.

The author is obviously a natural story teller who can cleverly weave multiple characters into a riveting plot while also demonstrating a better than average knowledge of genealogy and genealogical research strategies.

This novel is very Steve Robinson'esque :) There were a few times the actions of the lead character, Forensic Genealogist Morton Farrier didn't make sense, but overall a great first effort and I look forward to more books in this series.

Couldn't stop reading "Hiding the Past" because the story - complete with mystery, suspense, & genealogy kept me riveted. Goodwin's style is easy to read, & he uses examples of real genealogy research through archive locations & explanations. As a family historian, the book was also fun for me to reaf. I greatly look forward to more adventures with Morton!

For anyone considering genealogy as a career, beware it can be fraught with danger. As an amateur genealogist I found the book fascinating and also helpful with mention of various research avenues. A good read.

Nathan Dylan Goodwyn has written a story featuring a character named Morton Farrier, a professional genealogist. As I read through each new chapter, I became more and more disgusted with Morton. As a mate for his girlfriend, he lacks compassion, caring, consideration and respect. He has a queasy stomach for everything he encounters. His childhood upbringing seems to function as an excuse for not being a decent human being especially where it concerns his father. In short, since I cannot bring myself to care about the main character I did not enjoy the book.

Note: I am an amateur genealogist (44 years and counting) so I was excited to hear about this book. Oh, well.

From the start of this book, the author kept me intrigued and wanting more. This genealogy adventure provided many twists and turns. I enjoyed learning about the challenges in the quest to uncover where someone comes from. I would definitely recommend this book to others. Enjoy!
