4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy!!!
As a woman, creepy. The storyline is super easy to follow. You guess the ending way before you get there. But it is a good creepy story. This is a no-brainer, entertaining mystery story. This is a good example of K Harper, get this book NOT "Deep Down" (quite possibly the worst book she has ever written)

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea - Poorly Executed
I bought this book because the concept seemed interesting. Less than 30 pages into the book, I had pretty much figured out what happened, but I slogged through the remaining 360 pages because I'm just not the type to not finish a book once I start. The dialogue is trite and contrived. Even in the midst of what should be an emotionally fraught situation, it reads like...

4.0 out of 5 stars action-packed romantic suspense, November 4, 2008
This review is from: The Hiding Place (Mira Romantic Suspense) (Mass Market Paperback)
Finders Keepers private investigator Tara Kinsale awakens after months in a coma to a series of deep stress shockers. First she learns that her best friend Alexis was murdered. Second, that she had been named guardian of Alexis' daughter Claire as the father is a rat who deserted his then wife and child for another woman. Third Claire's uncle, Nick McMahon has arrived from military duty in Afghanistan to raise his niece. Fourth her own spouse divorced her and remarried. Finally, she learns from her doctor that she gave birth while in the coma.

As Tara struggles to bring the parts together into a cohesive package, she agrees to help Nick and Claire become a family. She makes inquires into her lost nine months especially the infant she birthed, but some unknown person wants her to remain either ignorant or dead.

This action-packed romantic suspense hooks the audience from the moment Tara opens her eyes to learn one stunner after another starting with the memory of how she became comatose until the final confrontation. The story line is fast-paced though at times overly angst laden with so much pressure on Tara. Still this is an exciting thriller as the past still haunts the heroine's present.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hiding Place, March 22, 2009

As always Karen Harper has a hit. I just love her books. Hard to put down once you start reading. I received this book while we were in the dark here in Kentucky after the ice storm and I just sat read all bundled up to keep from freezing and really enjoyed it's plot and it kept my mind off the power being off and having no heat. It is a great book.

As with all Karen Harper novels this one is mezmerizing. She is an amazing storyteller. I never miss one of her novels and I'm never disappointed. They just get better with each one.

I bought this book because the concept seemed interesting. Less than 30 pages into the book, I had pretty much figured out what happened, but I slogged through the remaining 360 pages because I'm just not the type to not finish a book once I start. The dialogue is trite and contrived. Even in the midst of what should be an emotionally fraught situation, it reads like the characters are calmly discussing their troubles over a cup of coffee. The narrative is repetitive and uninspired and clearly the author has not yet mastered the concept of "show, don't tell." I'm a big fan of pulp fiction and so was not exactly expecting the great American novel, but this book was just kind of -- boring.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable...but entertaining, November 30, 2011
By
This review is from: The Hiding Place (Mira Romantic Suspense) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is really predictable. I wish there had been at least one twist or surprise. It's not Karen Harper's best by a long shot. Her Amish mysteries are really where she shines!

I found the Nick's character to be dull & drab. No real feeling or depth there. I enjoyed Tara's mother in law though...she's a hoot!

It kept me interested to the end. But that's about it. One time read.

I have been reading and rereading Karen Harper's books this summer and this was one I had never read. One of her best. I highly recommend it.

** spoiler alert ** This book, often labled as romantic suspense, was neither romantic nor suspenseful so already it was falling short for me. The pace was so slow that I kept waiting for something - anything - to happen. The plot and personal motivations were so ludicrous as to be unbelievable. A patriarch and his son engaged in deception, forcibly induced coma, stalking, bribery and even murder... all for an heir? Come on. That's a vast strech of the imagination. Maybe it could have worked with another author (though I am highly doubtful - the motivation seems awfully weak to justify the actions) but this just did not work for me. Don't think I'll be seeking anything else out by Harper.
