Julia Wilson, a London attorney, is doing a routine check of companies in Hong Kong for her firm when she notices that a business with which her husband is involved is on the illegal activities list. After she mentions this to him, someone pushes her down the parking garage stairs. In the hospital, Julia finds out that she is two months pregnant, and is told to rest at home. But her home in Wiltshire isn't safe, and the bad company's files disappear from her laptop. Then her housekeeper extraordinaire is replaced by a woman with questionable domestic skills and a penchant for snooping. Tanner, author of
Morwenna House (2002) and
Tucker's Inn [BKL F 1 04], is a master of the gothic, cleverly updating classic gothic elements--the vulnerable woman in danger, the slightly sinister housekeeper, an ambiguous but nefarious scheme afoot, and a husband who is acting very suspiciously.
