Biography

sonic youththe eternal

The Eternal is Sonic Youth’s 2009 celebration of newfound freedom. After many years signed to an ever precarious corporate label, the band has been liberated and is releasing this CD with their friends at Matador. Inspirations ran high in preparation for the recording. Abandoning the time tested routine of writing and rehearsing a cycle of songs in one time period, SY changed… Read more in Amazon's Sonic Youth Store

Editorial Reviews

Hidros 3 was written for Sonic Youth by Mats Gustafsson in connection with KulturBro 2000. The piece was premiered on Oct 9th 2000 at the Ystad Konstmuseum in south of Sweden. Together, Gustafsson & Sonic Youth teamed up with American guitar legend Loren Mazzacane Connors, Lotta Melin, David Stackenäs & Lindha Kallerdahl. Armed with 5 guitars, electronics, voices, audiobox & contrabass saxophone, the group created a massive & monumental sound. Hidros 3 is in many ways related to Sonic Youth`s releases on their own SYR label (Sonic Youth Records) & their soundtrack to the French movie "Demonlover". But what differs this albums from their past SYR albums is the absolutely stunning vocal by Kim Gordon that gives the album almost a pop feel. Hauntingly beautiful, raw & poetic! The characteristic "spoken" vocals from Kim Gordon & the moody, atmospheric & dissonant sound makes you think of the NYC in the early 80`s & the first albums by Sonic Youth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense Free Euro-Influenced Improv- So What's this Gotta Do with Patti Smith?, August 29, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hidros 3 (Audio CD)
T. Moore and the gang over the last five years have well immersed themselves within the (actual) confines of Euro-Free Jazz/Improv. I use the verb "confine" because indeed 40+ years later this is a style of music that has rules and certain soundscapes.

You think I am just blathering on?

Check out Incus recording artists' guitarist Derek Bailey (whom I bet Thurston would've given his left nut to jam with before his sad departure in 2005) and altosaxophonist Evan Parker (Evan is no longer on the label due to a row with DB, but another time...). Both after 40 years of recording didn't exactly play "free", "anysound goes" music. Their styles became well developed, recognizable and totally their own. And I, for one, think it's the best music out there. Indeed, my band in Vermont plays free, world, jazz, tribal, screaming and disturbing to the normies music heavily influenced by the artists mentioned above, including SY.

But what this all has to do with Patti Smith, now a member of Cleveland Rocks! is way beyond me. It's a great free improv album, with Kim Gordon blathering on about who knows what.

If you like challenging music- recommended. If you like Sonic Youth Geffen released albums, avoid like locusts eating your crops.
