Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Walpole , the fourth Earl of Orford, is appropriately the fourth author to be included in Mercury's "Neglected Classics" series, which began in 1991 with Lewis Carroll's The Complete Sylvie and Bruno (Classic Returns, LJ 10/1/92) and most recently includes Henry Handel Richardson's The Getting of Wisdom (Classic Returns, LJ 5/1/93). Remembered as the author of the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto , Walpole penned these seven tales for limited publication in 1786. The popularity of the fantasy genre today may spur interest in these strange stories. Large public and academic fiction collections will want to consider.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and sarcastic stories., December 14, 2010

I wasn't sure what I was in for when I started reading the author's preface to this book - but once I read the first story, I understood what was going on. It is very over the top, surreal fantasy humor fiction, and it's VERY funny at times. Quick stories to read, and well worth the time!

Wonderful.

Reminded me a lot of Douglas Adams' style (though technically, I suppose one should say that Adams' has a Walpolish style, but I read Adams 3 decades before any Walpole, so there you have it).
