This review is from: Hieronymus Bosch (An Artabras Book) (Hardcover)
The copy I have was printed in Germany, copyright 1965, with first published in English 1966 at the beginning of the book. On page 50 I found a Preface from 1937 and a comment by Charles de Tolnay dated 1966 about new photographs of the works, but "we felt justified in retaining the original text unaltered." I planned to read every word when the Roots section at the beginning of the book attributed a universal outlook to the independent spirit of the artist. The idea of drawing "inspiration from the indigenous spirit of his country" (p. 11) for a Dutch landscape that "unfolds itself in a sweeping sense of hitherto unknown breadth, through which wafts a breeze never felt before, no longer hemmed in by the traditional backcloth and wings of rocks and hills" (Ibid.) strikes me as ironic in 2011 when the record tornados are making modern life as sensational as Bosch paintings.
