Finally a normal looking cookie!,
By LatinaBarbie "LB" (Redlands, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: High Altitude Baking: 200 Delicious Recipes & Tips for Great Cookies, Cakes, Breads & More (Paperback)
I live in the S.CA mountains at 6000 ft, and since moving here I have been at a loss in terms of turning out a decent oatmeal cookie. I have made several attempts, with different recipes, but to no avail. The end result was, sadly, always the same: a flat disc.
I had almost given up on my cookie baking when I found this book. I just finished baking up the oatmeal cookie recipe, and they turned out perfectly...just like what I remember from my old days in Orange County. There didn't seem to be enough of the ingredients including sugar and flour when I was making the recipe, but what do I know, the recipe turned out a beautifully plump batch of cookies. I am going to try a cake next and report back. What a thrill to successfully bake again...

Some recipes are just awful tasting and some recipes are just amazing. All the recipes by Melissa Craven are so good. There is a recipe of Chococlate Chocolate Chip Cookies that is always a hit at the parties and people beg me to make them all the time.

A Fantastic Resource,
This review is from: High Altitude Baking: 200 Delicious Recipes & Tips for Great Cookies, Cakes, Breads & More (Paperback)
I live over 8,000 feet and had basically given up on baking certain things, like bread. The recipes in this book are great! My bread actually came out the size of a normal loaf, and my biscuits popped up like they are supposed to. My boys said, "You mean biscuits aren't supposed to look like lumps of dough?"
The recipes are also healthy--lots of them have whole wheat options, or ways to cut back on sugar. Many are also fruit or vegetable-based. I've made so many of the recipes in the book, and only a very few have not been delicious.

I live in Mexico at 6,500 feet and needed clear guidance on how to bake successfully. The information in this book offers clear cut suggestions and simplifies some of the mysteries. Very useful, basic, not fancy, a good first start!

I purchased a cookbook for high altitude cooking that was written at the University of Colorado. My son lives in Colorado and has taken an interest in bread baking. The cookbook came just in time, and he has used it a lot and loves it. He was a little disappointed in that it did not have a pizza recipe, but has tried several other recipes in the book and was very pleased with them.

The Recipies are Failures,
This review is from: High Altitude Baking: 200 Delicious Recipes & Tips for Great Cookies, Cakes, Breads & More (Paperback)
I moved from sea level to over 7000 ft. I was a very talented baker. But none of my sea level recipes work at the new altitude. I was hoping this book would help me find a way to adjust my recipes. It does not . The 4 recipes I did try from this book tasted like dirt. I did follow the recipe fully and had high hopes. I moved from the USA to the mountains of Mexico. Not only does it take longer to cook any thing at a higher altitude, flavor is lost at a higher altitude and needs adjustment. This book does not explain that.
I can not tell anyone to purchase this cook book and expect to be able to bake successfully at high altitudes.

I have been able to create cookies that were not pancakes, had lovely texture and flavor and brought me back to the joy of baking I had before I moved to 3200 feet. I keep the cookie mixture in my fridge and make different cookies
quickly. This book has made such a huge difference to me and my cookie loving husband. Thank you!!!!

you live in a high altitude place. It is informative and scientific but you understand why your dough does not rise nicely or your cake is always hard and dry. I like the recipes. I wish there were color photos and pictures.
