The second edition of this popular text covers the critical rescue skills needed by emergency personnel working in both rural and urban areas. HIGH ANGLE RESCUE TECHNIQUES contains instruction for personal high angle rope skills and team rope rescue skills. The first half of the book introduces the student to the high angle environment, equipment used and specific personal skills. The second half of the book defines rope rescue as it is used by various disciplines, like law enforcement and fire service, and details some of the standard skills used in rope rescue. It also describes how communication is used in rescue, what distinguishes a team in rescue, and reviews the medical response needs in rescue. Every emergency provider should have access to this informative book which is the only compilation of all critical material relating to confined space hazards and emergencies.

Includes key terms and a glossary to introduce readers to the correct terminology and focus on learning new terms. Features objectives in each chapter to help readers organize material and devote attention to important points. Includes evaluation exercises and student activities at the conclusion of every chapter with answers in the back of the book to provide immediate feedback and clarification. Presents a compilation of all relevant standards and regulations, as well as coherent interpretations of what they mean. Introduces many viable and accepted alternative methods to procedures to allow students to determine which techniques are best used in any given situation or environment. Includes special suggestion, caution and warning boxes offering tips on equipment, things to be careful or aware of, and warnings about avoiding common and uncommon problems. Contains an almost completely new photography program that depicts the newest equipment and procedures, accurately reflecting the field as it is today.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...High Angle Rescue is unquestionably the best Rope Rescue reference available today. The content is US orientated and can therefore be slightly at odds with countries elsewhere but the authors have referenced just about every difference even if they haven't covered it in detail so there's no excuse for confusion. We can't recommend this book enough - If your agency will only purchase one rope rescue book make sure it's this one!" - TECHNICAL RESCUE, Issue 43. This review is from: High Angle Rescue Techniques, 2e (Paperback)
Tom Vines is the training officer at Carbon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue in Red Lodge, Montana. Steve Hudson is President of Pigeon Mountain Industries, Inc., and Deputy Director, Walker County Emergency Management in Lafayette, Georgia. Together these two experts have created an instructional text that can be read profitably by anyone, whether a beginner or an experienced rope jockey. Every chapter is fully illustrated, teaching skills step-by-step in an instructional style that works in the classroom as well as on the side of a cliff. Quizzes at the end of each chapter help hone your skills, and answers, provided at the back of the book, allow you to check your knowledge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent manual for beginning to advanced rope technicians., December 28, 1998
By A Customer
Hudson and Vine give an excellent, easy to read manual for the how-to's of rope rescue. Rangers, firefighters, SWAT officers and those folks who like to hang on rope will appreciate the logical layout and easy to follow instructions. If you have an interest in the vertical world of rope rescue, this is an excellent volume for your library.
