Wakefield, a septuagenarian with wanderlust, has written a memoir of her adventures and misadventures in the Andes. Every air traveler has some horror story to relate, but Wakefield's retelling of hers seems to emphasize Latin stereotypes: e.g., the manana mentality. The narrative has this underlying motif, which detracts from the travelogue itself. When Wakefield describes sights, sounds, and smells, or discusses Inca lore, she is top-notch. An excellent bibliography of materials in English and Spanish is included. Recommended for public libraries serving an older population; others caveat emptor. Paula M.
