Editorial Reviews

2013 tribute to Country legends Alabama, released to coincide with the band's 40th anniversary. Including everything from hits to deep cuts and featuring artists like Jason Isbell and Old Crow Medicine Show, the compilation was recorded appropriately in the South, between Muscle Shoals, Athens and Nashville. High Cotton is a labor of love and longtime fan/executive producer Logan Rogers couldn't be more pleased with the end result: ''It seems too good to be true for me to get some of my favorite bands to record Alabama songs. It was clear that all these artists share my genuine love and respect for Alabama's body of work, and this album exceeded all my expectations.''

I first heard about this CD last week at the Americana Music Conference in Nashville where a number of the artists on the CD performed live at Grimey's Record Store. I took the CD home and have been playing it almost daily. Some of the artists are well-known to Americana fans (Amanda Shires, Todd Snider and Jason Isbell) but a few were new to me (Jessica Lea Mayfield, Hardy Morris, Wade Bowen & Brandy Clark) but nearly all will be new to Alabama's core "country" audience and might give exposure to the groups here. And one of the highlights is hearing the Blind Boys of Alabama (can you think of a more appropriate group to end the album? Singing "Christmas Time in Dixie". It's now only September but it sure doesn't seem out of season to me.

The 6-panel digipak spends three of them (one on cover, two inside) on Alabama's logo. I certainly would have preferred a bit of bio info on the artists in this space. But that's not enough to drop any stars here.

Americana and country music fans, I think you'll both enjoy this album.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

My wife loves "ALABAMA" and if you saw her "ALABAMA" collection of memorabilia starting from High School, you'd be amazed. I bought this for her (and the other new "ALABAMA" CD) and when the mailman delivered it, she was very happy, to say the least. I bought it for her and now she has them all, on CD, Record, Cassette and even 8 Track. She's going to the "ALABAMA" concert in Nashville this year. She's got great seats and I love her very much and that's why I'm sending her to Nashville to see them. This might be their last concert. Both new CDs are excellent quality and arrived in great shape. Buy them both, you'll enjoy them in your CD player. Hope you also are going to see them. Both concert nights are SOLD OUT

I heard Jason Boland and The Turnpike Troubadours play their songs, in concert, and loved them. But several of the others are just slowed down versions of the original. Not what I expected from Red Dirt Country. Some quality Alabama songs suddenly putting me to sleep.

Tribute albums often attract some controversy and this one is no exception. Other artists stamp their own identity on some of the tracks, and this upsets some fans who think the only way is the original way. No it isn't, although even I will point it out if somebody trying to pay tribute messes it up. That isn't the case here. Some tracks are closer to the originals than others, but Alabama as well as the artists paying tribute should be proud of this album.

When I bought it, I recognized some of the artists (Elizabeth Cook, the Blind boys of Alabama) and I've also heard of the Old Crow Medicine Show, while the name Brandy Clark rings a bell too. Other than that, the artists are unfamiliar to me, The album came with a sticker on the front saying the album was by Jessica Lea Mayfield and other artists. On first playing, I felt that Jessica didn't quite justify that billing because (for me) the backing music was a little too dominant, but that's a minor criticism in an otherwise outstanding album.

The songs, we are told, are in each case the artist's favorite Alabama song. I'm slightly surprised that nobody selected Tennessee River, but all the choices are good so I'm not complaining there. I reminded myself of Alabama's hits and there are plenty of other great songs that could have been featured but weren't. I particularly like I can't love you any less (Amanda Shires), which I wasn't released as an Alabama single. It may be the least obvious choice on the album here, but it's a good one.

So many outstanding tracks make this a fantastic tribute to Alabama.

The Wild Country boys should be proud of the ripple effect they had on country music. This album honors what Alabama has done by recording these songs as a tribute to the legenday band - Alabama! A lot of great talented artists such as Jason Isbell, Turnpike Troubadours, Wade Bowen, Jason Boland, and so many others. Much better than the Nashville mainstream Alabama collaboration that just came out.
