The females in Linda Lael Miller's pleasantly provoking frontier romance, High Country Bride, often insist that the McKettrick men are thick-headed, and Rafe McKettrick, the eldest of the three brothers, proves them right. Forced to take a wife in order to inherit the family ranch, Rafe decides to send for a mail-order bride. He expects to be able to wed and bed her in short order, but strong-willed Emmeline Harding doesn't succumb to his rough-edged charm so readily. Linda Lael Miller is the author of seventy historical and contemporary romance novels, many of which are set in the American West. She was awarded the Romance Writers of America's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
In January of 2006, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Linda Lael Miller left the Arizona horse property she's called home for the past five years and listened to the call of her heart. Packing up her work-in-progress for HQN Books; her dogs, Sadie and Bernice, and her four horses, the author of more than 70 novels bid farewell to her home in the desert and returned to the place of her birth, Spokane, Washington. The daughter of a town marshal, Linda grew up in Northport, WA, a community of 500 on the Columbia River, 120 miles north of Spokane. Her childhood remembrances include riding horses and playing cowgirl on her grandparents' nearby farm. Her grandparents' spread was so rustic that in the early days it lacked electricity and running water.
As delightful as this childhood was, Linda longed to see the world. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she left to pursue her dream. Devoted to helping others pursue their dreams, the author will launch her sixth round of Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women in May of this year. A talented speaker, she donates all her speaking honoraria to her scholarship fund. The stipends are awarded to women who seek to better their lot in life through education.
It's no wonder the protagonists in Miller's novels are women her readers admire for their honor, courage, trustworthiness, valor and determination to succeed, despite overwhelming odds. This book made me laugh out loud. I loved how Rafe was totally in the dark about what Emmeline was doing or thinking. I laughed at the antics of Becky and her daughter. Rafe breaks your heart with his sweet, albeit misguided, offers of a hot brick and a nightgown. I totally loved this book. I really cannot explain why, it just seemed like a fun romp in the southwest. A cowboy and his mail-order bride. I haven't read much of Ms. Miller, but I do know that I will definitely be purchasing the second offering in the McKettrick series. Hopefully Ms. Miller won't stop at Kade and Jeb. I need to see a novel about Holt, too!!

The first in a new series, HIGH COUNTRY BRIDE was a quick, entertaining read. It is the fairly fast-paced tale of Rafe McKettrick, one of three brothers forced to compete to be the first to produce an heir in order to inherit a sizeable ranch, and Emmeline Harding, niece of a brothel madam, and, maybe, a prostitute, who is his mail-order bride. This novel is thick with fun, interesting characters, love (so many couples!!), and a certain amount of mystery in the shape of one "Sister Mandy" who everyone doubts is actually a nun. I look forward to seeing how marriage turns out for the other McKettrick boys.

As a Linda Lael Miller fan I am always excited when something new of hers comes out. I was not disappointed with High Country Bride. This is the first in a trilogy about three brothers who are being forced by their father to marry and father an heir if they want control of family ranch. This is difficult in a town where there are no desirable women. High Country Bride is the story of the oldest brother Rafe and his mail order bride Emmeline. This book is funny, sad and a little maddening all in one. There were times when I wanted to shake Emmeline for being so silly and others when she broke my heart. Rafe is a great hero and I look forward to his brother Kade and Jed's stories.
