Customer Reviews

In fact, it was actually picking up the WiFi network from an elementary school 7 (city) blocks away from my house with 2 out of 5 bars!
Jennifer
The antenna that comes with this wireless adapter is great for looking all around you for a signal, but if you need greater range, get a panel antenna.
Amazon Customer
The suction cup dock method is useless with the 9dbi antenna because its too top heavy, which causes the mount to lean or flip upside down.

As the happy owner of an Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW wireless adpater, I purchased the Alfa AWUS036NH 2000mW wireless adpater for my second computer expecting to be ecstatic.

Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the 2000mW adapter has more difficulty finding, acquiring, and maintaining connections to wireless access points than does the less expensive, supposedly less powerful 1000mW adapter.

Regardless of the combinations of cables, antennas, computers, locations, and updated drivers I tried, the 2000mW adapter consistently found fewer than half as many access points and reported far lower signal strength than did the 1000mW adapter.

Assuming that I'd received a defective item, I contacted a customer service agent at DB Roth who politely handled my call and promptly shipped a replacement adapter.

Unfortunately the second AWUS036NH performed just as badly as the first. Since both 2000mW adapters had exhibited the same behavior and the 1000mW adapter performed perfectly (as has been similarly reported by other Amazon.com customers), I have decided to exchange the 2000mW adapter for the less expensive 1000mW adapter.

DB Roth customer service has been extremely helpful. In spite of a brief misunderstanding over shipping charges, Bianca in customer service deserves very high marks.

Sadly, I can't say the same for the Alfa 2000mW adapter.

I would like to point out to all of those who have been dissapointed by this item and would like inform you on possible reasons you may not experience the advertised range. When it is advertised as 1-2 miles, it means 1-2 miles line of sight. So in other other words you can't just put this adpter in any window in locations that have other houses trees or and other objects in the way of the signal and that includes electronic devices that interfere with signal. The antenna is omnidirectional and you will never get the distance out of it that you will with an antenna that only focuses on less than 180 degrees. A good example to reference would be a satellite dish. It is very possible to get great range from any adapter when set up properly physically and and virtually.
I love this adapter and have been gaining 1 or 2 bar signals on every wireless network that comes up. Also you dont need to have this adapter and the built in adapter running at the same time to get a better signal and most of the time they will somehow affect each other and not give you a true reading.

Unbelievable range and power. Anyone who doesn't love this doesn't know what they have or doesn't know how to use it. Backtrack and 64bit Windows compatible, who could ask for more?

DISCLAIMER:I do not work for Alfa. I am just your average do-it-yourselfer who loves working with Backtrack and Wi-Fi tech/gizmos.

I've been looking for a good strong wireless card for awhile now to use with backtrack. I saw a lot of buzz on the internet about these Alfa USB wireless cards and finally got the spare cash to buy one. It took me a while to decide whether I wanted to get the "confirmed awesome" "B/G" only (AWUS036H) card, locking myself into the soon to be obsolete "G" technology, or if I wanted to try my luck on the newcomer which supports "B/G/N" technology. I finally decided to take the chance and get this B/G/N version.

This card is phenomenal.

Now, for those of you, like me, who are Atheros chipset buffs, fear not. While this device DOES NOT have an Atheros chipset, it is still a great card. I think it is either Ralink or Realtek. I can't remember now, but anyway, I took it out of the box and attempted to install the driver found on the enclosed CD, and like other reviewers here have stated, it was a no-go. The driver installed without error on my PC, but the device will not use it (wrong driver). I am guessing that the issue must be that the enclosed CD doesn't contain a 64-bit driver. So, as I am running Win 7 x64, I went and got the correct driver from Alfa's website, which is the Windows 7 driver package (I guess it contains 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Windows 7 driver). Got that installed, screwed on the stock 5 dBi antenna first, plugged it in and held the unit in the window next to my computer desk.

The performance at this point is pretty good, as far as just doing a site survey.

Ok let me just said that I have spent a lot of time looking around, testing wifi antenna, cantenna, poor man antenna etc. I'm from New York city yes the big jungle. I tried it all. I have to say that by far this has been the best wifi antenna that has worked for me on this concrete city. I ordered the set 5 and 9 dbi then made another order for the 7 dbi. In plain terms the 7 dbi antenna is a Directional antenna which means works best when you know where the wifi signal is coming from. Take into consideration that antennas work best as in PLAIN SIGHT which means don't expect to get all bars if you have 3,4,5 wall from the signal. as in the 9dbi antenna is OMNIDIRECTIONAL which means it will scan for a radius of signal but nevertheless is strong getting wifi signals. I rated 4 star because the fact that they could have make the adapter a little more sturdier but the clip on holder works great. The window suction is a joke it keeps falling off don't use it since by falling you can damage your adapter. other then that i have to say that on a concrete walls surrounding me I'm able to achieve 3 bars from none on a range of 40 yards. I recommend this item specially for you fellow new yorkers.
