Book Description

A boy with dreams of adventure…a girl with a traumatic past…and a prince determined to take a throne…

Ailean MacLachlainn, the son of a poor crofter in Scotland’s highlands, wants a life of adventure. He often daydreams of being a respected warrior of his clan. And he battles rival Latharn Cambeul in the game of camanachd…and wins. But Ailean meets a girl, and a shy smile and a glance from Mùirne's blue eyes turns his head. He wins her love, and his rivalry with Latharn is no longer a game with a camanachd stick, now they fight with swords.

Ailean gets his wish to become a warrior when Bonnie Prince Charlie comes to raise a Highland army in the attempt to retake his father’s throne. Ailean’s clan chief involves his clan in the uprising, and sets Ailean on a course toward a destiny he could never have forseen.

What happens when a man’s dreams turn to dust? And when a man loses everything, does he have what it takes to go on?

HIGH ON A MOUNTAIN is the stirring tale of one man’s remarkable journey through life. A story of adventure and love…of faith, loss, and redemption.

"MY FAVORITE READ for 2011..." ~ Spirit Filled Kindle, on Facebook

From the Author

A friend often mentioned the experience of his Highland ancestor who had been sold as a slave and lived on a plantation near Savannah, Georgia. His comments intrigued me, because I'd never heard of the enslavement of the Celtic people of Scotland and Ireland. I also had Scottish ancestors, and my friend's comments spurred me to study and learn more about Scotland and its people, which I did during the six years of research prior to writing High on a Mountain.

What I learned surprised me. And the more I learned, the more convinced I became that someone should write a story about the ordinary people of the Highlands and some of the tragic things they suffered. The information is available in history texts, but many people are not interested in reading history books.

I decided to fictionalize the historic events, keeping the story true to the historical record, but  making it entertaining. And I wrote about what happened as it could have affected the life of one ordinary man.
Hopefully, the information will inspire readers to do their own research into the happenings of that era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scottish Tale October 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Tommie Lyn obviously did a lot of research before writing this outstanding novel about life in Scotland during the 1700's. Thanks to the vivid word pictures, I can imagine the beauty of the land and the simple existence of the common man. It's hard to read about the painful events that destroyed the lives of so many innocent people, especially when you know that the story is based on actual history. I had so much compassion for the main character, as he suffered hardships that should never befall anyone. He is a fine example of a man who has every excuse to give in and give up, but somehow, with divine assistance, will survive instead, and eventually triumph against all odds. The writing is beautiful, beginning with the very first sentence, and the story will stay with me forever. Just be sure to have a box of tissues on hand when you read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings history to life March 30, 2011
This book is amazing -- the story of a Scottish man, a Highlander from the 1700s, written by an American woman of the 20th century who nevertheless captures the era, the culture, the events with amazing accuracy and clarity.

Don't look here for the romance-novel version of the Highland hero, the laird of the castle, the knight in shining armour. Ailean MacLachlainn is from a family of poor crofters -- what we might call tenant farmers or sharecroppers today. Highlander life is hard, sometimes wretched, and though Ailean's early life holds some promise, he will see everything he loves turn to ashes while he is still a young man.

Yet he manages to carry on through losses that would break a lesser man. Lyn's creation of her protagonist is the embodiment of the novel's dedication, " our Scottish ancestors, who suffered so much, yet endured it all without complaint and without succumbing to self-pity."

Written with the smooth, solid prose so lacking in much of today's popular fiction, High On a Mountain is a winner. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars High on a Mountain January 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book took me into the era of 1742 Scotland, and America later, it was so real. This is definitely a christian novel. Clean passionate scenes, and since it was a violent time ... But very well written totally enjoyed it . Read it in one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Favorite October 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Just thinking about this book brings a lump to my throat! There are some books that are a waste of several hours of your life. There are others that you like but you only tell your friends "Yeah I read that" when they ask. Then there are those books that you can't stop telling people about. You bring those books up in random conversations because the story is stuck in your brain. You want your friends to read the book, too, just so you can talk about it.

"High on a Mountain" is this last kind of book. This book has the kind of characters that haunt your sleep, and a story that occupies your daydreams. The fast-paced story is hard to put down in an addictive way. I can't tell you how much I loved this epic; it's definitely Tommie Lyn's masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Accuracy PLUS Compelling Action March 30, 2011
By Bro Jim
This is a rare work of both historical accuracy as well as compelling action. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down and kept on all night and in to the next day. That doesn't happen to me very often that I make cofee at 2 am to keep reading a novel! I'm a history buff and an American Scot who is active in the Scottish community in the US. Tommie Lyn has told OUR story in an emotional, yet historically accurate way. Far from being a dry history book, "High on a Mountain", brings the story of our families down to a personal level. Thanks for writing such a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tommie Lyn Scores Big on High on a Mountain February 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Please let me recommend a wonderful book which is part of a series written by my friend Tommie Lyn. High on A Mountain begins in 1700s Scotland with the MacLaughlainn Clan. It begins following Ailean who is young, happy, and in love enjoying his family and life into the Scottish Highlands. Then came along the Clan wars with Ailean's family brought to a devastating point in their family. When Ailean became a man, his boyhood dreams faded. Ailean loses everything but gains a new life that he had not clue was coming. I was so sad for him for so long in this book. I could see the events taking place and feel Ailean's broken heart. But they never broke his spirit. Time and time again, he proves true making it a great book for teaching character development.

There is not one single curse word or sexually explicit part in the book. How refreshing to read pure literature and not the raunchiness that compromises quality literature.

I learned so much about the Clan Wars which is of special significance to me as a member of the McMillan Clan. My ancestors came to this county from Scotland near that same time.

Tommie's research is amazing. Her historical fiction is enchanting. You won't want to put this down. You'll fall in love too. Tommie is finishing up Book 3 - Across the Wide River -- which includes the Trail of Tears. Then, she will begin research for Book 4 - On the Red Clay Hills - which will take the MacLaughlainn family through the War for Southern Independence. That's great news for me and my Confederate friends.

It was a decent read but so slow in places. The villain in the background went on much too long. Maybe some developed sub-plots would have helped. Read more

More About the Author

I grew up in the Appalachian foothills of north Georgia, spending summer evenings on the front porch listening spellbound as grownups told tales of local events, including stories of the supernatural.

Storytelling has been a big part of my life ever since. As a small child, I often entertained myself by imagining exciting stories, even before I could write. Now, when I enter a story world and watch the characters act out an interesting or exciting tale, I write down what they do and share it.
