Great book. Each chapter presents an academic perspective on one of America's most misunderstood regions. The collection of authors represents some of the most respected researchers in the field of Appalachian Studies, and they have made each of their various disciplines approachable for both interested lay people and other researchers. A wonderful introduction to the region and Appalachian Studies in general.

Growing up in the mountains I grew sick of our Appalachian "enrichment" programs.

Then I took a class in college with this book. It was a great introduction to the history and was a different approach to the subject that was much more inviting to me. Through using this book in class I am now much more proud of my upbringing in this area than I had been in the past.

This is more scholarly than I expected. No pictures...prose is pretty straightforward. The title led me to expect something more poetic.
