A friend from Backpacker magazine lent us one of these backpacks and in looking it over, I was so impressed that I immediately ordered one online. However, my current backpack is heavy and from 1995 so I haven't looked at other modern alternatives. The most dramatic difference is that compared to the 1995 Jansport it is very light and compact. It has a compartment separating the upper and lower portion but a long object like a rolled thermarest could be be inserted through this for the whole length. It has provision for a camelbak water bag, but I'm not sure I want that inside my pack where it would soak my clothing if it leaked. The total volume is significantly less than my Jansport, but I was able to pack the essentials for a long-weekend backpack inside. It would encourage me to carry less than my usual 45-50 lb! I'm not sure it is large enough for a longer trip, especially if I had to carry tent, winter bag, thermarest, cooking gear, rain gear, and even food! But if I strapped waterproof stuff sacks outside, it would carry as much as the old Jansport and be no more awkward. I'm still looking forward to actually taking a trip with it. Oh yes! It is totally and easily adjustable so that a smaller woman or a tall man could wear it comfortably.
