Here is a revolutionary new program from exercise and nutrition guru John Parrillo offering the first high-calorie food plan for losing fat. Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The basic message of this book is rather motherly: eat, eat. But according to trainer and former bodybuilding champ Parrillo, it's quite revolutionary advice in the world of bodybuilding, where it's not uncommon for those pumping iron to resort to starvation diets and even diuretics in their quest for "lean mass." Parrillo's more sensible approach centers on adding calories (up to 10,000 a day for men) and eating four to five times a day, with meals structured around a lean protein (chicken or fish) and one or two starch carbohydrates (cauliflower, green beans). Except for its proscription of fruit of any kind, this is not a bad regimen for those who don't spend most of their time in the gym, and the text is quite straightforward and approachable. Still, the book is meant for a very specialized audience. Entire chapters are devoted to the ingestion of esoteric nutritional supplements (dessicated liver tablets, supplemental growth hormone releasers) and "fascial stretching," which Parrillo claims can help weight lifters achieve "bigger muscles, deeper separations, greater strength." There are also pre-competition tips, clearly not intended for the general exercising public: "If your muscles are hard but your skin is loose, drink slightly less water. If your muscles are soft and lack vascularity, increase your carbohydrates and slightly more water. On the other hand, if you look hard, ripped, and vascular, do not change a thing."

5.0 out of 5 stars More calories to get lean, counterintuitive!, July 29, 2010
This review is from: High-Performance Bodybuilding (Paperback)
Yet that is just want John Parrillo wants you to do in your quest to get bigger and leaner. I've owned many copies of this book over the years, and it's one that I return to consistently. You will see that many nutrition and coaches today advocating increasing calories and activity to fire up your metabolism, in short, you will be eating a lot and exercising a lot. That's nothing new, John was advocating it back in the late 80's and early 90's. Morning fasted state cardio? Yup, John had us pounding the pavement back when Haney was still Mr. O! Advanced stretching techniques to force your muscles to accomodate size increases? Yes siree, John Parrillo was already there.

Although this book could have been way more detailed and contained less photos, it's a good primer for his systems available on his website. This was relevant then, and it's a great book to add to your collection now. There are other better books about getting into contest condition, but this one is a classic.

Awesome book although some of the info is somewhat dated. Great section on fascia stretching for size. Parillo is one of the pioneers in the world of bodybuilding.
