Book Description

September 6, 1996

Paul Caligiuri's soccer talent is surpassed only by his passion for the game. Undoubtedly one of the best and most complete players in U.S. soccer history, Caligiuri has competed in two World Cups and has been a member of the U.S. National Team for 12 years. He was also one of the first Americans to play professional soccer in Europe.

Now in High-Performance Soccer Caligiuri reveals the secrets to success and shows players and coaches at all levels how to maximize soccer skills. Readers will learn about Caligiuri's love for the game and how they, too, can become complete, well-rounded soccer players.

High-Performance Soccer is filled with Caligiuri's insights on the techniques and tactics of soccer as well as those of many of the game's top players and coaches. The book explains the technical keys of

- receiving,
- dribbling,
- heading,
- passing,
- scoring, and
- goalkeeping.

For each skill, Caligiuri presents many of the one-person and group exercises he used as a kid growing up in Southern California. The book also includes lots of games and exercises that can be used in both formal and informal practice situations.

High-Performance Soccer also presents Caligiuri's insights on the inner qualities soccer players need to succeed: how having the right attitude, work ethic, and priorities is just as important for success as speed, skill, and tactical awareness. In addition, the book offers valuable insights on how players can maximize their chances of earning college soccer scholarships.

High-Performance Soccer is filled with technical advice, insightful tips, and practice exercises for players and coaches who want to excel on the field.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Though soccer may never reach the level of popularity in the U.S. that it has attained elsewhere, it is nonetheless a very popular sport, particularly on a participant level. Caligiuri, a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and one of the first Americans to compete at the top European professional levels, presents a valuable, well-organized instructional aimed at the skilled player looking to move to the next level. Rather than discussing the simple art of receiving a pass, he offers tips on immediately turning that reception into an offensive thrust. His approach relies on aggressiveness: a defensive stop is most valuable when an immediate offensive strike results. Chapters cover passing, heading, dribbling, receiving, goalkeeping, and developing the proper attitude. Each skill chapter also includes appropriate drills. Soccer players looking to improve will seek out this fine guide. Wes Lukowsky

Review

Players and coaches receive a specific handbook which blends game strategy insights with exercises designed for both informal and formal game sessions. What are the qualities which separate successful soccer players from others? Caligiuri imparts his basic understanding of strategies. -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Better for motivation than as a "how-to" guide., June 30, 1998

This review is from: High-Performance Soccer: Techniques & Tactics for Advanced Play (Paperback)
This is a great book for young players who want to take their game to highest level in high school and prepare for soccer at the college or even professional level. It teaches some advanced moves, but its real strength is helping young players understand the discipline and love for the game it takes to play at the highest levels.

This is fantastic book for the young soccer player. The book is written to the level of a high school player and details the passion and discipline it takes to make it to the next level. The tips and drills to perform with friends and on your own,are with out a doubt, excellent and should be done on a daily basis. I highly recommend this to all youth soccer players and coaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for the serious soccer player or coach., April 8, 1998

This review is from: High-Performance Soccer: Techniques & Tactics for Advanced Play (Paperback)
High Performance Soccer gave me great insight into the world of upper level soccer. All players that aspire to bigger and better things can learn a great deal from Paul Caligiuri. The information in these pages can apply to all age groups of competitive soccer. I can't wait to get on the field and teach these new found skills. I read it from cover to cover and then went back and hilighted all of the items that I believe to be useful. The inside of the book is now flouresant yellow!
