Book Description

July 8, 2003
"First of all, just for the record, I love me some me. You heard right. . .I truly love Miss Queenisha Renae Sutton. The tall, well-endowed, fine honey-coated sistah that I be."

Queenisha Renae Sutton is always ready, willing and able to walk away from any man who either can't or won't appreciate her, because after all, she is all woman. Then she meets tall and handsome Zeke Washington at a charity fundraiser, and buys him lock, stock and barrel. For one night. Determined to get her money's worth, she approaches their first date with one goal: to make Zeke her man, no matter what the cost. With the help of her best friend, Poetta, who puts a "voodoo hex" on Zeke to help lure him in, Queenisha gets more than she bargained for. And before long she finds herself changing to please a man. And if love wasn't complicated enough, she discovers an even sweeter love where she least expects it.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Queensiha Renae Sutton is a very confident, plus-size woman. She is never so desperate to have a relationship that she cannot walk away from a bad situation. Yet, she does want a companion. Poetta Chenell James, Queenie's best friend, tricks her into attending a fundraiser where male celebrity look-a-likes are being auctioned. Queenie outbids all the other women for a date with the handsome Zeke Washington. As good looking as Zeke is, he has a household situation with his roommate, Sweet Willie, that makes dating difficult. Poe's love life takes a turn for the worse when she discovers that Jimboy, the man she has been dating, is married. She performs a hex on him, but it goes wrong and he dies. Despite the heartaches they experience looking for a mate, they remain friends and find love in the strangest places with the most unexpected men. Lillian Lewis

More About the Author

Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, Debra Phillips is the third child from a brood of eight. A loner in her younger years, Debra amused herself by making up songs and poems. Her love for words soon grew into the writing of short stories.

First attempts at being published came to fruition with the acceptance of a Confessional story to JIVE magazine. From there the seed was planted that she would and could write, and even with all the rejections she endured in the beginning, it was her goal to never give up the dream of being a published author.

A writer who refuse to be classified in a specific 'genre', Debra Phillips writes romance, mainstream, urban fiction, and children picture books. She is the author of four books: Kiss or Keep, The High Price Of A Good Man, Too Much Drama, and her latest book: Love Trumps Game, which is penned under her alter ego name of D.Y. Phillips, her initials.

Currently she lives in southern California with her husband, Reggie, and is busy working on book five.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, June 13, 2003
This review is from: The High Price of a Good Man: A Novel (Paperback)
Queenisha "Queenie" Sutton was a beautiful and very successful woman. She did whatever was needed to get what she wanted. That included snaring handsome Zeke Washington! While at a charity fund-raiser Zeke was put up for auction. Winner "purchased" him for a single night. Queenie was determined to make him HER man! She even went to her best friend, Poetta, who put a "voodoo hex" on Zeke. But Queenie got a lot more than she ever expected!

Meanwhile, Raymondo (a co-worker) was out to make Queenie HIS woman. But Queenie wanted no part of him! As for Poetta, she was not just a side-line character. Poetta had her own trouble. She was in love with a married man. But the man dropped dead when her love spell went wrong!

If you like "sister-hood" then this book is for you! Filled with humor and a sassy wit, this story was easy to like. Well written characters that will keep you reading.

This book is hysterically funny. It had me laughing out loud on the New York subway. Especially the parts where Queen interacts with her co-worker Raymo and her dates roommate, "Sweet Willie". Where does Debra come up with this stuff? If you're looking for a good read, I highly recommend this book.

L. Hayes, author of "Afroetry".

I really liked "The High Price of a Good Man." It was a little wordy and slow reading in the beginning but once we met Sweet Willie things picked up. Women "big or small" can appreciate the humor and camaraderie between these characters. I found the story entertaining and the situations painfully true. I admire the honesty, the wit and humor applied to the topics of friendship, love, self-esteem, and weight. We have to love ourselves before we can love anyone else!
