Editorial Reviews

Night Ranger truly epitomizes the sound of the 80's while at the same time transcending it. Since their reunion in 1996, they have brought their guitar heavy, melodic brand of hard rock into the 21st century with their unparalleled talent, energy and creativity. HIGH ROAD is the culmination of the band's work to date and celebrates the band's 30th anniversary with incredible melodic cuts and hard rocking numbers. Night Ranger's new album has everything the fans, both old and new, could ask for!

Night Ranger's legendary hits 'Sister Christian,' '(You Can Still) Rock in America,' and 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' are songs that each significantly impacted popular culture upon release and today, continue to expand their ever-growing fanbase as new listeners are exposed to them.

Night Ranger's 11th studio album, High Road, has just come out. But is it any good? I'm happy to report that Night Ranger fans, and those who enjoy great rock music, will love this album. In addition to having a gorgeous album cover, High Road is full of upbeat, guitar-driven rock songs, along with a few ballads and an instrumental track for good measure.

If you buy the Deluxe Version, you'll receive a bonus track, "The Mountain Song," and a DVD with two music videos and a behind-the-scenes video about how the album was made. And the Best Buy-exclusive Deluxe Version features a second bonus track, "Don't Even Know Your Name."

Below is my track-by-track review of High Road:

"High Road"

This might be my favorite rocker on the album. It's a country-infused rock song that makes you want to drive down a highway in a convertible with the wind blowing through your hair. It's such a positive song, you can't help but feel good after listening to it.

"Knock Knock Never Stop"

A killer guitar riff? Check. A ferocious vocal? Check. An infectious melody? Check. This song has it all and it serves as a great follow-up to "High Road."

"Rollin' On"

"Rollin' On" has a harder edge to it than the first two tracks, as well as a dark, funky groove. It's a fun guitar-driven number that would be great to hear live.

"Don't Live Here Anymore"

This is hands-down the best ballad on the album. Kelly's vocal is phenomenal, the lyrics are tremendous and the piano is beautifully haunting. It's a gorgeous song about overcoming addiction and arguably the best track on the album.

"I'm Coming Home"

Yet another great guitar riff.

When I gave this album its first listen, I would not have guessed that, here in 2014, so many years down the road from that first time I saw the video for "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" on MTV, I was about to hear Night Ranger's best work ever. But I think this is my new favorite among their body of work. As with most bands who pride themselves on their "versatility," Night Ranger music runs the gamut from hard rock to ballads, and my tastes have always favored the former by a wide margin (I will hit the skip button every time "Sister Christian" comes up). Bottom line, if your favorite Night Ranger songs are "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" and "You Can Still Rock in America," you will LOVE this album. If your favorite is "Sister Christian," then there is less for you here, but still a couple of excellent songs of that genre. Personally, if I want to hear crooning I will queue up some Frank Sinatra. When I fire up Night Ranger, I want to hear shredding guitars and pure aural energy with hooks you can't get out of your head, and this album delivers that in spades.

Well the boys are back. After a few weeks of releases (High Road, I'm Coming Home, and Knock Knock Never Stop) we finally got the new CD landed on Tuesday! I've listened several times and I have to say this is an instant classic in my book. The overall sound is classic Night Ranger, with modern touches, a very mature approach to the composition, and even some throw back elements. Overall, I'd give this 6 stars!

The tracks:

High Road - Classic feel in the vein of When You Close Your Eyes. Jack is in great voice on this one, the guitar solo is killer, and this is very well written, composed and performed track. I feel that rock radio could love this if they'd give it a chance. I know classic rock stations are spinning it, and the response has to be outstanding. I have to say this is probably one of the best new tracks since the band reformed in 1996.

Knock Knock Never Stop - Great rocker with an anthem feel to it. Just typical straight ahead amazing music from beginning to end. Jack once again is in great voice, as is Kelly on this dual lead vocal track. Hard to believe that Jack just turned 60 years old. The guitar work on this track is very intricate, and the keyboards are ever present. Eric Levy has an Alan Fitzgerald way of holding the song together without you even realizing he is there. Again great solo on guitar. One small criticism, I almost feel this should have been the closing track, I think it would have book ended this CD perfectly with High Road.

Rollin' On - How these guys can continue to find a ways to make quality straight ahead rockers like this one are beyond me. Just looking at the last 3 albums including this one they've had so many quality straight ahead rockers its unfathomable. I would love to hear all of them live.

Good solid CD. Not as good as the band's first two or three CDs, but one of the better post-1985 CDs.

I hope the music industry reads my review. Back in the day of MTV, 50% of the music I purchased I saw on MTV as San Francisco rock radio stations after the late 70's where never that good, always wanting to be classic orientated.
This Night Ranger CD/DVD is what we need, to see and listen, our built in MTV.
I have listened to this CD 4 times in the last week and it is great Night Ranger music with hits made for the radio. Great stuff.
The sound quality stereo (right/left-sub) is fantastic and has great clarity and punch.
The package is plastic and paper and awesome with great liner notes, lyrics, photos, etc. Make the print just a tiny bit larger guys.
The 2 song and "making of" DVD is fantastic, giving me insight into where the band is now and there approach to being Night Ranger. The two video songs, High Road and Knock Knock Never Stop grabs you and says, yeah this band is still good and rocks. If the rock music industry can bring this format to the buying public I believe the new and old rockers will give 100% support. Great job Night Ranger.
