Poor Haruna,
By setlib (Nashville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: High School Debut, Vol. 11 (Paperback)
This is my least favorite volume so far. First, a rival for Yoh's affections drives a wedge in between Haruna and Yoh, leaving poor Haruna to fret and worry and cry (and overeat) for about a hundred pages. I found the rival to be a shallowly-drawn character and the incident that drives Haruna and Yoh apart to be completely unbelievable. It almost felt like the author had to produce an extra volume at the last minute and so stuck in this soap opera-like twist that didn't have much relation to the plot before or afterwards, or the arc of character development. In the last chapter, Haruna innocently invites Yoh on a birthday trip to a resort that includes an overnight stay. However when everyone else freaks out, she belatedly realizes that everyone (including possibly Yoh) expects them to "do it" during the trip. Knowing Haruna, of course, this causes a comic storm of embarrassment and anxiety. Again, I was disappointed that this sudden plot twist was thrown in here, in a series that up to this point had been refreshingly free of sexual references. However, things improve in the next volume. |
