Editorial Reviews

Review

"Recommended for secondary school, public, and academic libraries." -- Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin, December 1, 1997

From High School to Work delivers on its claim of providing comprehensive information about school-to-work programs. It provides important information to those who prefer to explore the hands-on approach for career development rather than attending a traditional four-year college. The reference book extensively details specific careers. The table of contents lists each career. The careers are in alphabetical order and make the index less of a necessity. At times, one must read an entire page to locate a minor career that is listed in the index. This is rather annoying and time consuming. Each career covers the same topics. The topics include: definitions, nature of work, requirements, opportunities for experience, and exploration, methods of entering, advancement, employment outlook, earnings, conditions of work, and source of additional information. There is a shaded sidebar that provides additional information such as salary range and outlook. There is no explanation in the introduction as to the meaning and the significance of the abbreviations DOT, GOE, and NOC, which are located in the sidebars. From High School to Work is accurate, well written and easy to understand. It should be an essential resource for students, career counselors, and career centers. -- From Independent Publisher
