I was looking for a backpack that I can use for both day hikes and for backpacking (I pack light when i go backpacking!). This pack is extremely comfortable, and has the perfect amount of storage for carrying all my gear. It has a sternum strap (which has elastic so it doesn't constrict your breathing), and a waist strap. padding on all the straps, and the padding on the back of the pack itself, is plenty comfortable. There is a phone/mp3 player pouch on the left shoulder strap, and the top of the pack has a special thru-hole for use with a water bladder.

My only complaint is that the zippers are a bit tricky to use. The zippers seem pretty durable, but it can be a pain in the butt if you have to unzip and zip the pack frequently. I think other reviewers pointed this out too. It isn't a deal-breaker, it's just kind of annoying. There is a fabric strip that covers the zippers (like most backpacks have), and if you pull it away from the zipper before you try to unzip the pack, it is much easier.

As far as capacity is concerned, I am able to fit all my backpacking gear (sleeping back, tent, food, fishing gear, etc), my full-size camera tripod that collapses to 15", and two 1-quart bottles in the mesh side pockets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Backpack, June 27, 2008

I recently bought this backpack to use while cycling and must say the quality is quite high. It seems to be made of a high quality water resistant material that will likely last a long time. The straps on this bag are thick and the back of the bag is made of a rather stiff foam. The pack is also versed with every attachment option imaginable, but I find it has too many straps that can get quite annoying. Inside there are not many pockets, just the two main pouches each with a thin separator and a small zip pocket. Overall for the price, this is a great backpack to use for outdoor activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Day Pack /light backpacking back for a terriffic price, September 29, 2009

I bought the black one and paid $49.95. What a bargain! I have paid much more money for much less pack. It's well made, comfortable, easy to organize and great for a grab and go hike. I wouldn't load 50 lbs of books in it and you can't use it for a four day backpack trip, but I have to carry a lot of water for my dog and this pack is a blessing. I have an arthritic shoulder and this pack gets the weight off of the painful spots and shifts it to the hip belt. I love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very comfortable and versitile., February 7, 2010

From the picture and the description, I was expecting a little bit of a bigger pack.
It is extremely comfortable, the waist and chest straps see to that well. Do not get me wrong
when I say i was expecting it to be bigger, its big for a day pack. It would even be okay on longer
and over night trips. So far I have used it for everything from hiking, snowboarding and camera hauling.
If youre in the market for a reliable and inexpensive pack, go for this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars not bad- wish it had more pockets, April 24, 2011

this is a comfortable hiking pack, nice straps-easy to adjust. but it looks like it should hold more than it does, and it only has the two large zippers- no smaller pockets for keys and such. But still a good pack.

I bought this for hauling groceries on 2 mile market trips. It is sturdy and well sewn. The style is attractive. I reserve further approval because the straps meant to add more stability and support for heavier loads are in the wrong place for an average woman.

Specifically, the sternum strap falls directly across the bust in a way that is both painful and potentially injurious. I am 5'6" and of very average build. Looking for an adjustment, I found no way around the unfortunate strap placement. The sternum strap needs to be a few inches lower or higher to be of any use to a woman. I seriously doubt any women will be able to fasten these straps without having the same issue. This area is not meant to bear a weight!

I am disappointed that the description does not mention that it really is not a gender-neutral pack. I wanted to be able to use the extra straps in order to distribute and secure heavier loads. Since the sternum strap is useless, I cannot ever get the full and intended benefit of the design. The reason I purchased this model was to have the weight more distributed over the body, otherwise, I would have skipped the extra flaps and straps for a more streamlined design. I will look very closely at my next pack before buying this feature again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice sturdy backpack, but terrible space allocation, April 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I got this backpack for my Alaska trip. Its a nice sturdy backpack capable of handling a lot of weight with good support for the back.

Its quite roomy too....the only complaint is that it does not have enough compartments. I had jam everything into the same space, which of course made it very difficult for me to separate items easily.

Otherwise, its a nice pack for a good price.

I have to carry around 20lbs (use to use a little cart but thats cumbersum) and this fits the bill. It is rugged and very durable so far. I don't need all the belts and straps but it's nice to know they are there. Keeps well in all kinds of weather also.

4.0 out of 5 stars Been all over, September 21, 2010

Took this pack to costa rica for a week. Worked well for the most part. A smaller zip pocket on the exterior would have nice as things tend to be hard to find in the big compartments. After a year of use the hoop handle on top is starting to pull out by the stiching. Side compression straps are great for getting bag small enough for overhead bins on planes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, January 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: High Sierra Cirque 30 Pack (Apparel)
Ordered the High Sierra Cirque 30 backpack off Amazon a couple weeks ago... been using it for about a week, and I love it. It's about as close to perfect as I could find. I'm one of those particular people who will shop something to death before I commit to buying anything, and this bag was no exception. It's got plenty of room in both compartments for everything I need to carry: I carry a couple of books for school in the large compartment, along with my clothes for the gym and my toiletries. I keep my gym shoes in the smaller front compartment so they don't get my clothes dirty. This also keeps the smelly gym shoes from stinking up my clothes. Everything fits perfectly. The best part of this bag though is the straps. The nicely padded back straps have dual adjustment: one to raise the pack higher on your back, and one to tighten the bag to your back. The padded waste strap is also key for keeping the bag high and tight to your back. As anyone who enjoys hiking knows, keeping the bag high and tight to your back is key to reducing fatigue, and it's also better for your back. This bag just feels so comfortable on my back I don't even really notice it's there. And I also run a lot with the bag on, and it doesn't move at all, it stays right where it should. The compression straps on either side help a lot with keeping everything from shaking around while you run, too. I've only had the bag for a week, so I can't honestly speak to it's durability, but it seems to be made just as well as my $500 mountain climbing back pack, so I'm sure it will last. Everything is double stitched and reinforced, and the materials seem top-notch. Zippers seem very strong, and the zippers each have hoods to keep rain out. Mesh bottle pouches are deep enough that bottles stay in place. Bag just fits into a gym 1/2 locker. Lots of thoughtful little extra touches.
