Cool idea - bad design,
By
This review is from: High Sierra 23" Transport Travel Pack (Apparel)
i took this to europe for a few weeks, i really liked the idea of two bags zipping into one unit. over all a good bag, and i really like that the larger of the two pieces has a shoulder strap (like a suitcase) and compartment to hide the shoulder straps. the biggest problem, and reason i would not use it for backpacking again, is it is not balanced.when full and zipped into one bag, it is top-heavy, and sticks out way too far behind you. basically, it pulls you backwards, so you must lean forward a bit to feel balanced with your center of gravity. i read a review that mentioned this issue, disregarded it, and now feel it was seriously under-emphasized.

A good bag and a good value,

I purchased this bag for a two-week trip around Greece and found it to be great for my needs. It's relatively roomy, yet the main pack just meets carry-on requirements and the small day-pack easily fits under an airplane seat. It's pretty comfortable to wear, with nicely padded straps on the main pack and good straps on the detachable day-pack. The shoulder strap is convenient as well--the main bag can be carried as a shoulder bag or with the padded suitcase handle if desired. The day-pack can also be clipped onto the front of the bag, which can be good both for security and to distribute weight more evenly. The bag was also pretty durable, although one of the metal clips on the shoulder strap came off when the strap got caught in an airport x-ray machine (not sure this is really the bag's fault though). Overall I am quite satisfied, especially for the price. Just keep in mind this is a travel bag--it's great for carrying on your back from hotel to hotel while traveling, but it's not one you would want to be wearing 100% of the time on your trip. (A metal-frame hiking-oriented pack might be better for that purpose.)

used this bag around the world,

It worked well enough that I used it for a 10 and 1/2 month trip. Depending on the airline, the main bag is small enough that, when separated from the day pack, it can be used as a carry-on. However, again it depends on the airline and aircraft. (Some airlines only allow 1 carry-on bag, and some airlines have smaller size allowances for carry-on luggage.) I bought a small bag so I could carry it on, but I quickly found myself checking it anyway because of the liquid restrictions on carry-on luggage. Also, even though it is small it's cumbersome to have to keep it with you in the airport. It's just easier to give it to the airlines and let them deal with it.If you intend on putting locks on the zippers note that you can do so but the zipper handles are made of fabric and not metal, so anyone with a pair of scissors could cut it and get in your bag. (However, I never had anything stolen.) Also, there is no way to lock the sunglasses holder on the day pack. The bag is pretty comfortable IMHO. I fit a small laptop (VAIO TX series with 11.1 inch screen) in the day pack. If you want a bag that will force you to pack lightly, get this bag. It held up fairly well--i.e. nothing broke. However, after over 20 flights and using this bag every day for the better part of a year, it's showing a good amount of wear and tear. Next time I travel I will get a bag that's just a tiny bit bigger, has metal zipper handles, has mesh pockets on the outside of the daypack. Lastly, I think it would be good to have a bag that has a pull-out waterproof cover; this one doesn't. All in all, for the money it's a great bag.

This is pretty good travel bag. Very comfortable and has good space. I used to for some 4 day trips and it is handy when you are planning to use public transportation. You can take off the extra bag if not needed to reduce the size and not carrying this big odd thing on domestic trips. The reason I gave this a 4 star is that the main compartment doesn't have any pockets at all. Regardless I think it is a good bag and looks pretty decent when carrying around.

High Sierra 23" travel bag,

I purchased this bag for a two week trip through Europe. France, Germany, and Italy. For convenience, security, and peace of mind, I didn't want to check any of my luggage at the airport. With this bag, the large pack went in the overhead, and the small daybag went under the seat. This pack will also force you to pack light. That is a good thing. As previously mentioned, the zipper pulls won't work well with padlocks. I purchased some Hog rings and inserted them in the zippers, so that I could use a lock on the zippers. This cost less than $10 to do. I have no previous backpacking experience, but I was fairly comfortable wearing this through train stations and while walking to Hostels or wherever, to drop off the main bag. Although the two bags can be zipped together to form one big bag, I have no Idea why anyone would want to do that. It would make it cumbersome and off balance. The small bag is intended to clip to the front straps of the big bag, so that it is positioned across your chest. Wearing it this way was very comfortable, convenient, and balanced, and also left my hands free. If this travel bag had any downfalls, it is that the small backpack should have a water bottle pouch, the large backpack should have a couple small compartments,

We used this pack to hike in Peru and it worked great. The only negatives were no water bottle harness on the day pack and no pocket for passports or other documents on the side against your back. Overall, we were satisfied

I used this for a 2 week trip around europe in the summer. It was very useful, the bags detach and hence allow you to carry on on the plane. wished there were more side pockets, especially on the smaller bag.It served its purpose well for me though, but might be harder if traveling around europe in the winter as you might have to pack more.

I bought this for a month-long trip in the US and overseas. Couple of tips:- It's good for a laptop as the larger part has straps to hold an item shaped like a laptop. - On domestic flights, I had to separate the two "halves" of the backpack as together the entire bag would not fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. - On international flights, with the larger bins, the entire bag fit comfortably overhead. - There's a bit too many straps on the outside for my liking. I think you could cut a couple off safely and not have it affect the utility of the bag. - The two compartments attach with a zipper. Fairly easy to use, although I wonder if over time the zipper will give way. - The two compartments is a nice touch, though. I was able to use the smaller one for day trips to the beach, etc. Overall a sturdy bag that is good for travel that could use a little streamlining. I recommend it if you can pick it up on sale.

Plastic sheet "internal frame" crumbled,

This backpack claims to have an "internal frame" which is actually a flimsy plastic sheet. I barely used the backpack, but after about six months the plastic frame started crumbling. All the plastic shards ended up in a pile at the bottom of the pack. I was forced to cut open a hole in the pack in order to remove all the pieces. The plastic was so soft that it continued to crumble as I handled it. I'd say this is pretty inexcusable. The overall design is decent and it looks good. However, I needed the frame for support, so I don't recommend it for hiking or heavy loads.

Good stuff...,
This review is from: High Sierra 23" Transport Travel Pack (Apparel)
Bought this travel pack a few months ago... but was only able to use it to its potential last weekend...fits a lot of stuff in there.. and the side opening makes it easier to pack and unpack stuff.. the cushioning on the back is good... Its good to put in a couple of days stuff... the only negative abt it.. after completely stuffing it.. the balance on the bag was not absolutely vertical causing me to bend forwards a little bit to negate the effect.. |
