5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent read
I consider myself a Xaime fan, but I'm getting more and more drawn into Beto's work. This collection is entertaining, sexy, funny, disturbing and all-around superlative. Two thumbs up!

This review is from: High Soft Lisp (Love and Rockets) (Paperback)
HIGH SOFT LISP is a TPB collection of comics that feature Rosalba "Fritz" Martinez, the half-sister of Luba from Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez's famed underground comic series "Love and Rockets". Fritz is a gorgeous Latino woman with a large bust who eventually finds a career as a psychiatrist and then a Z-list movie actress (she's a virtual unknown in the U.S. but a minor player in the overseas markets). Illustrated in black and white, the stories in HIGH SOFT LISP follow Fritz from a high school student into middle age. Some of the strips are narrated through the eyes of one of her former husbands, Mark Herrera.

Before reading HIGH SOFT LISP, I had never heard of LOVE AND ROCKETS and I wasn't sure what to expect. Fritz is definitely an interesting character. However, though the book revolves around Fritz, she isn't always the center of attention. Mark Herrera is the main character in two of the storylines and another focuses on another of Fritz's ex-husbands, Enrique Escobar. Though I found the plotlines to be semi-interesting, the thing that stood out most about the book is how sexually graphic these mini-graphic novels are: Fritz is seen naked a lot, a lot of panels feature full frontal male nudity, and several panels feature people involved in various forms of sex. The stories seem to want to make a point, but whatever messages there are become lost in the soft-porn tone of the book. This is definitely a book NOT intended for children.

HIGH SOFT LISP is a book that fans of LOVE AND ROCKETS might enjoy as well as those who enjoy underground comics. Beyond that, teenage boys are probably this book's largest audience.
