I really enjoyed this short story. The reader was led through the whole series of incidents very well. I could feel myself ducking at the idea of mowing an orchard. The story was interesting and was not over dramatised, which suited the content well. This made the tale have a documentary feel, rather than the pacing you would expect from fiction. If I have any criticism, it is that the moving on of the spirit was not described in the narrative, which was a disappointment.
I think Mel published this story as a hook to get readers into her other books, and in that it succeeded very well. There were no typos that I could find in the piece and the formatting was good. A welcome change nowadays. It looks like I'll be reading some of her fiction in the near future.
