My company was growing and we were experiencing some real challenges. I was confiding in a friend, a few of the problems we were experiencing, and he started quoting from one of the author's books. I purchased a copy of The New High Tech manager, and it's been by my side ever since.

There are truths here which should not be held simply within the management circle. Every aspiring technician should begin with this material. Its in-sight is practicle and easy to apply. Similar to some of the other readers, I keep it close by as a reference.

However, I do agree, that every manager should own a copy. There are elements of strength in this book that has been lacking in business leadership for a long time.

The only reason I did'nt give it a five is, contrary to what "Bo" might think, there is no such thing as a ten. This book should be on the desk of every manager, and it should appear to be well-worn. I refer to my copy constantly. Its application to day-to-day situations is phenominal. The time I used to spend thinking about how to solve, or even approach certain problems, I now spend thumbing through this book. It does not give me every answer, but usually provokes enough thought to point me in the right direction. OK, four and a half stars.

For the Technical person: OK, so you proved you know how to code (OK, big deal, you even set up a few web pages like it was some kind of black art <g>). Then you even went so far as to have actually delivered the system in some form in a reasonable time. Then you got promoted. Now you have to actually manage a team or department. Now your confused. You can't just look up the method in a reference book or download the code off the net. READ this book. It is the most straightforward and concise listing of the skills & tools you need to master to be successful. The price is well worth the investment in your career.

For the Confused manager: Forgot what you were supposed to be doing? Looking for the basics you need to master in order to get back on track? READ this book.

No quick fix here. But I'm sure if you "Master these management fundementals", you'll do better than most. Forget the price, its an investment in your career

There is nothing more difficult or sensitive in my business than decision making. The chapter on the "decision tree" alone, has made me a few million dollars. I would say that's a pretty good deal, and it had nothing to do with high technology.
