Having some issues with this door,
By
This review is from: High Tech Pet Power Pet Large Electronic Pet Door PX-2 (Misc.)
I'm happy to hear that others are having good luck with this product. Unfortunately, our experience has not been quite as positive.First, I was a bit disappointed at the construction. For this price point I would have expected something other than flimsy plastic. Second, within a month of buying the door the retractable plastic piece started randomly going up and down. I called their customer service department to inquire. The rep described it as a known issue. The solution was to disable the auto-retract safety feature. I asked when a permanent fix was forthcoming and she told me that disabling the safety feature WAS the fix. Baffled, I asked if she thought that was a good solution. She told me I could return the product for a refund if I wanted to (after having cut a hole in the side of my house) in that pseudo-polite, passive-aggressive manner that makes me want to rub broken glass in my eyes. I hope that she was simply someone who needs to be fired rather than a typical representation of the company. Third, as others have noted, the collar and "fob" are extraordinarily flimsy. My standard poodle destroyed hers within a few weeks. Compared to other dogs, she is very gentle so I was surprised when it just fell apart. I was able to click it back together a few times and get it working, but this last time I saw some sort of yellow-ish corrosive looking goo inside it. My wife called their customer service and they are sending a replacement. Meanwhile, the poor dog is very confused. :) Fourth, the fob is NOT directional. We have fought with sensitivity settings until we are cross-eyed and whenever the dog is close to the door, it opens. Had we paid $50 or $75 for this product I wouldn't have even bothered with this review. But, at ~$400.00 (including wall extension, extra batteries, shipping, etc) I am fairly disappointed. I hope others find this helpful.

This is the device that has allowed my 81 year old mother to keep her 60 pound collie. I thought it would take days to train this dog how to use this and it took less than three minutes. The door was installed in room just out side the main door to the house. Some call it a mud room or breeze way. We had a carpenter do the install. The dog is able to let himself in and out all day long. If my mother leaves the house she puts the dog in the breeze way and he is set to go out to his pen and back in again. She can leave all day long and not worry about letting him out. This is just a fantastic product. The dog loves the freedom and we enjoy watching our mother with her cherished pet. I would highly recommend for most families and especially elderly pet owners.

We purchased this door because our cat wanted to defend its territory. We also had 3 dogs, a 90+-pound Lab mix, an 80+-pound Lab mix and a Sheltie. The door installed easily, and the dogs learned to use it within minutes. We had visiting dogs (2 more large Lab mixes) and they learned to use the door as quickly. Our only problem was with the collars, until I used small cable ties to keep the case together. Since that time not problems with losing the case top and inside electronics, we had had the door about three years. Recently a problem developed with the mechanism, it did not respond at all unless someone struck a blow on the door adjacent to the pet door. Checking with the manufactures web site indicated this failure require a replacement of the main circuit board. The manufacturer will rebuild the door for about half the cost of a replacement with a new door and provide a new warranty. Shipping time is the only consideration in all this, leaving the door non-functioning whether ordering parts, a new door or refurbishing the old door. We have had excellent success with the door for several years, and in spite of the current problem, I would recommend this door to everyone.I do however want to warn potential buyers of a specific vendor "Better Life 24/7" that is a non-responsive vendor. I was told to expect my door no later than October 21st. On October 24th I queried the vendor and did not receive any response from my inquiry. I know that vendors have little control over the USPS or UPS/FedEx services, but a simple acknowledgement of my email to them (thru Amazon)would have been nice. I can not recommend anyone purchase anything from "Better Life 24/7". It is now November 8th, I have yet to hear anything from "Better Life 24/7". I have the greatest respect for Amazon, they filed a claim for the damaged product and I received a full refund.

The Best Overall Solution,
This review is from: High Tech Pet Power Pet Large Electronic Pet Door PX-2 (Misc.)
We have 2 dogs, both mini aussies, 30 and 50 pounds. We were going crazy letting them in and out, and the last time we went on vacation and had a pet sitter come over, they chewed things all over the house waiting for her to come by to let them out. So, my wife said, "We have to get a doggie door." I began researching the field.
We didn't want a traditional "flap" door because of the likely HVAC leaks and the potential for animals to enter our home. So, I decided we needed something with an electronic sensor and lock. The only other electronic door that has any sales volume is the Pet Safe door, but reviews for it were not at all favorable. That left the High Tech Power Pet door as the only good option. We had to buy a new patio door to install it (because our existing one was all glass), but decided it was worth it based on reviews. The reviews are correct (you can read many, many at[...]). This is the best solution for anyone wanting to let their pet out when it wants to go out. Our dogs learned immediately how to use it. Now we can go to bed at night knowing that if Pepper or Dusty want out, they can go out. And squirrels, etc. won't be able to get in. The only problem is our two cats feel left out. But they lose their collars, and the sensors are expensive. The only negative is the sensor. I know we are going to have to buy more of these, and at $35 a shot, that is going to add up. Also, they come with a simple thin strap that goes around your pet's neck. There is no easy way to attach it to a traditional collar. They should make an attachment that permits this. The good news on sensors is they are light weight. They are also directional, so if your pet walks by the door but doesn't face it, the door most likely will not open. If your pet stands there in front of the door, it will stay open, waiting for the pet to go through. It's basically a Star Trek door for your pet. The best part was Amazon Prime. Not only was the door cheaper than ANY PLACE else, we got it in 2 days. I love Amazon Prime!

Very expensive pet door - but only one of its kind!,
This review is from: High Tech Pet Power Pet Large Electronic Pet Door PX-2 (Misc.)
I bought a medium automatic pet door in October 2011. Very happy with the door and my dogs quickly took to it. I paid $330 for the door + another $200 on collars and replacement collars. My door did malfunction about 2 months after the 1 year warranty (of course). I was originally very frustrated for a few reasons. First, I spent so much money on their product and couldn't believe it went out so soon ... and second, I was frustrated with the initial customer service person on the phone. They have an amazing follow up team that I spoke to a few days after I called about my broken door ... they were extremely helpful and they stand behind their claim of "engineered to last a lifetime". Perhaps I just got the 1 door that went out too soon?? Only time will tell. However, they have sent me a replacement door with an extended warranty. This really proves to me that they stand behind their product. It really makes me feel good about their product AND the fact that I have spent so much on their product. I knocked out 1 star only because these doors and collars are super expensive. A downfall ... however you get an awesome door that you can't find anywhere out there! A note on their waterproof collars ... not really waterproof so I wouldn't spend the extra money on them. Mine have gone out with just a simple drizzle outside. Instead I recommend the regular collars and buying a few back ups.

A MUST HAVE !!,

I purchsed this door about a year ago. I dont know how I lived without it.
Since the purchase neither My 8yr old German Sheppard or 5 yr old Husky have made one "mistake" inside. It took less than a minute to train them to use it . The door is transparent yet is tinted to add privacy. I had this professionaly installed / hardwired so I didnt have to fuss with battery charging every month, but do have the battery backup as well. The only reason I gave this 4 Stars , not five is because I have run into just one issue the transmitter collar is prone to snap apart when the dog scratches neck area xtra hard and the foot hits the transmitter cover causing both the cover & battery to fall off. Between the two dogs it has happened only 3x total / in the past year Other than that I have not had one problem. It is about as attractive as it could be for a dog door. It gives me the freedom as well not having to rush home knowing my dogs are doing the potty dance. see my 3 customer pictures attatched to item.

This is a great product. We just got new doors and windows in the house so I figured the old flappy dog door needed to go. This one works great. Air tight seal so no more drafts. It took our poodle (not a particularly smart one) about a week to get completely adjusted and now she prances in and out at her pleasure. Also, it's nice to know that no other critters can come in, just our own adorable poodle critter. It was pretty easy to install but I didn't have to cut a hole in the wall as I was just replacing our old dog door with this one. I also decided to get the backup battery with the door in case of a power outage. It's a bit on the pricey side, but worth it to me.

The door is pretty cool. But the collar didn't last a day, we failed to see that they cost $30 each. Door is great. It is nice that it doesn't close on the dog, will open back up if it is closing.
