Book Description

Pilot Adam Walker has had one great love in his life: Harris Kingston. But twelve years ago, when he accepted a scholarship and joined the Navy, he chose duty to his country over love. Their on-again off-again relationship was never more than private joy, a frustrating fact of military life.

Harris never wanted to be anyone's dirty little secret. When Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed two years ago, Adam broke his heart one last time. He's picked up the pieces and moved on, building a great career and dating guys who aren't afraid to be seen in public with him. But when Adam strolls into his salon asking for a haircut, his newfound happiness goes to hell in a handbasket.

Adam's been at war with himself for over a decade. Now on the verge of leaving the military, he's desperate to court Harris the right way and be forgiven. With two weeks' leave and a Navy man's conviction, he's ready to start over…if he can convince Harris he's ready to come out and commit.

4.0 out of 5 stars B rating... May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
My Review:
There were elements of this book that I absolutely adored and then there were elements that I really didn't fully understand.

Adam and Harris....have been friends and lovers for a long time, but it's always been totally hidden. Mainly because Adam has a military career that would have been destroyed by coming out of the closet. But that excuse went away two years before the events in this book when Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed...but Adam didn't come home to claim Harris. That's the part I can't get past...much like Harris. So I completely understand Harris's viewpoint throughout this whole story where he can't forgive and forget. Two. Years. That's a long time. And the thing one is denying that these guys love each other. They do, but...TWO. YEARS.

The thing is, I also really liked Adam and felt for him, because he realizes that he's blown it. For once, he's the one getting his heart crushed (normally during the history of their relationship, he's continually left Harris). After being in the closet for so long, he thinks he's ready, but that's the one thing that happens in this book is his character growth as he realizes just how wrong he's been. He took for granted that Harris would just always be there for him and that their feelings would be enough, but Harris has moved on.

It's kind of a tough book because these guys are so at-odd with each other and where they are going from here. I think the explanations needed to go just a few steps further to smooth over why things happened when they did and how they recovered from that in the end. It could have been a truly amazing book with another 5-10k words added, in my opinion. For all the drama and trauma, things wrapped up too quickly for me to be quite believable. But I did enjoy the story overall and liked the characters, even with all their flaws.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars SO good! June 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
*4.5 stars*

I'm utterly shocked.

Vanessa North, you go girl! This book was awesome, and that is saying a LOT for a novella. I'm shocked that I even liked this one, much less loved it, because I sort of loathe established couple stories. However, this one had a ton of surprises and so many things that made me adore it.

First thing that tipped me off that I was going to like this one: The bigger guy is the bottom. And a complete bottom at that. That is one of my FAVORITE themes (is this considered a theme??) in M/M. And a military man to boot?!! *swoon* I don't know why, but when a femme guy tops the crap out of a muscular bottom a little dirty part of my soul sings a happy song.

On that note... DAMN those sex scenes were hot! I could have used much, much more of them and MUCH more of that killer dirty talking! I just about died when Harris was talking all hot and nasty to Adam. On your next book, please include about 100 more pages of dirty talk and sexual tension resulting in dirty talk... and sex... *mind in gutter*

Another thing that I love: Angst. Now, this cannot be mistaken for my biggest reading pet peeve: The silly misunderstanding. I love angst that comes out of two individuals fighting for each other, battling insecurity and personal demons, and having their relationship come out on top. I adored the angst in this book and I was rooting for these characters. Some people found these guys to be kind of unlikeable. I found them to be real.

What Vanessa North nailed was the writing. I loved it. The prose was well thought out, tight, and sexy without being over the top. It was a style that I immediately connected with--> I WANT MORE!

What a fantastic, unexpected surprise!

3.0 out of 5 stars Exercise in frustration June 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
And this is another tale which for some weird reason author decided to make a novella instead of novel. It is *very* nicely written - flashbacks worked well for me, the story of Adam and Harris' more than decade "not really a relationship" was vivid in my mind.

I thought both Adam and Harris were great characters, and deserved the forever fairy tale, but they are so effed up. Well mostly Adam is by decade of lying to himself because of "Don't ask don't tell" and then after it was repealed because he was scared, but Harris is also not sure about Adam at all and then YAY, all is good? No, really it is not. More pages were needed to make the ending less rushed IMO.

4.0 out of 5 stars short and sensual May 22, 2014

High and Tight , Vanessa North

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews.

This is a shortish read at 26,000 words, but touching, relevant and complete. I enjoyed it though I hadn't looked and noticed it was a novella, despite my usual antipathy to shorts I liked it ;-)
So, Adam seemed to me to be a real jerk when we first met him. He wanted Harris, had done since they were at school but also wanted his Navy career.....Then the policy of DADT was repealed and Harris exepcted Adam to contact him..but he didn't. Broken hearted he tried to move on with Jason, now its two years later, Adam's on leave and wants to pick up where they left off.
It seemed to me Adam wanted to have his cake and eat it so to speak, and poor Harris had got a rough deal. Why should he abandon Jason, and take up with Adam when he'd no guarantee that Adam wouldn't still keep his Gay side secret. He needed action not words. Then we see how it all started, and some of Adam's inner thoughts and my mind began to waver.
It's a great read, once again showing how tough life can be for those who don't fit what people percieve as “the norm”, how rife discrimination still can be despite legislation and how it impacts on so many peoples lives.
Stars: four, a touching, tender read, quite deep in parts consdering it's length.
