Rousing early Mancini score, September 19, 2007

Though best known as the source of the Oscar-winning song "The Second Time Around," this Mancini score is light-hearted romp. The film, though now largely forgotten (and so far unreleased on VHS or DVD), was one of Blake Edwards and Mancini's first film projects after their hit "Peter Gunn" show on TV. Originally set to star Gary Cooper and stalled by Cooper's illness with cancer, the film was recast with Bing Crosby starring as a Howard Johnson-style restaurant zillionaire who quits the business world and enrolls as a college freshman (Tuesday Weld and Fabian are among his campus friends). Mancini's music includes a nod to the popular teen dances of the era, but also some loose musicals numbers in variety of moods, including a rousing college fight song heard under the film's credits. As with most Mancini scores, this recording is not a "soundtrack" but a studio recording of music from the film score.
