Book Description

Every time Lisa and Molly cross paths, disaster seems to follow close behind. Whether they meet in gym class or get assigned to the same raft on the seventh-grade class camping trip, outgoing Lisa and reserved Molly can't seem to find any common ground. An argument during the raft trip gets both girls into trouble. When it seems like things couldn't get any worse, Molly and Lisa are accidentally left behind as the rest of the group heads downstream, unaware that the girls are missing.

Stranded together in a rugged California wilderness, can these enemies join forces to survive?

4.0 out of 5 stars Smart or Social?, May 12, 2004
This review is from: High Water (Paperback)
Molly is a very alert kid, and has picked up a lot in her life, perhaps just by standing back and observing. She has obviously paid attention to quite a few things outside of herself and her world. She figures out that crossing the river is the best bet for a trip to safety, and reasons that if they cross now, their clothes will have a chance to dry before nightfall, when it will be necessary to garner protection from the cold. Of course you have to read the story to find out where her erstwhile intelligent assessment of the situation actually leads them. Molly also designs a way to leave trail markers, and she has heard and remembers tips on how to keep warm, which come in very handy in the dark of night. Lisa, on the other hand, is quite the dullard, and does not seem to have learned much in her life other than how to get along with the "in-crowd". And what use is that, ultimately? Well, again, you are going to have to read the book.

This book sharpens the distinction between two different kinds of girls, and will give comfort to a girl from either group. Those like Molly can take comfort in knowing that there is great honor and pride in learning all you can about the world and having that knowledge at the ready when danger strikes. And even those more like Lisa, who really does not seem to devote many brain cells to deep thought, can see that there is hope. Not all kids like Lisa will just follow blindly along with the nasty machinations of their peers. At least Lisa has reservations about joining in with some of the nasty things Rayna wants to orchestrate....she is likely to turn out a pretty good adult in the end.

I want to know what happens to Molly and Lisa in the NEXT book.....these two could become very interesting friends, but will their peers ever know it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic Fights !, May 3, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: High Water (Paperback)
This book is about two girls who get left behind on a camping trip. They both despise each other. They get into many fights but all too soon are the fights over. This author has a particular gift for describing how mean fights can get between teenage-tweenage girls.

I think the fights were one of the best parts of the book. I was enjoying reading them. As a ten year old girl, I can tell you that girls don't really reconcile this easily. In fact, there are studies which prove that girls hold grudges longer than boys.

Despite the fights ending too soon, this book is definitely a good one and I look forward to more books by this author.
