Poor Linux support,

Although advertising Linux support, don't expect a typical level of support for this product. Unlike most Linux drivers, the driver for this product is maintained outside of the kernel and is far behind. Because it is outside of the kernel, it isn't included in any Linux distributions. We're not even talking RAID support here -- you can't even access your disks individually. Even if you don't mind installing the driver yourself, good luck if you are running any recent version of Linux. The driver page ([...]) hasn't been updated since 2009. The last 5 versions of Fedora are completely unsupported by the driver, and the last 3 don't even work if you manually compile the driver. Even the latest version of RedHat Enterprise Linux is completely unsupported.
Buyer beware!

Worst support in the history of mankind,

This company is unable to support their products.
If you need support forget it. I've been dealing with them for over a year (if you can call a one way conversation "dealing with"). Web support is a laugh. Phone support is non-existent. Basically if you need help you will not get any.

This thing has been running about 3 years straight. Except for an occasional reboot due to the OS and not the card. I run 8 1TB 5400RPM WD's in RAID 5. I easily get 370MB/s read & 320MB/s write w/o any tweaking on NTFS in Windows, slightly higher on ext4 in Linux. 7200RPM drives couldn't push the speed much higher because it's already hitting the SATA 3.0Gb/s limit.Initially I was hesitant because of the price. My only regret is all the wasted time and money I spent procrastinating and not buying this sooner. I came here today because I'm interested in buying another one. I'm shocked the price is still close to what I paid 3+ years ago. I was hoping the price had dropped after all this time. It won't stop me, it's worth every dime. The reviews are also surprising. I haven't needed support so I can't evaluate it. I found all firmware, drivers (Win, Ubuntu, CentOS), and utilities I downloaded worked flawlessly. If you think you need support, you probably shouldn't be messing around with this anyway.

The only issue I encountered was trying to boot my computer up for the first time with the raid controller and all my new hard drives plugged in. It would crash during boot up. It would never make it to Windows. Through some trial and error, I found that my computer was able to boot when all of the hard drives were disconnected from the raid controller. At that point I was able to boot into Windows to apply firmware updates to the card. I was also able to get the software installed on my computer. At that point, I simply plugged in the hard drives and everything worked like a charm.
Works like it should. |
