Book Description

156022021X 978-1560220213 December 15, 1993 1
Here is a book that sets forth vital information growers need to produce highbush blueberries effectively and efficiently. Written from the grower?s point of view, The Highbush Blueberry and Its Management presents technical information in a highly readable manner that is easy to understand. It helps growers make proper decisions before they plant--saving them both time and money. Simply by following the directions on planting, a grower could cut his post-plant mortality rate to less than ten-percent.

The Highbush Blueberry and Its Management provides detailed information that growers can apply directly to their work. The author addresses various aspects of blueberry management, including how to select new cultivars, pruning techniques, soil preparation and management, harvesting, pest control, and marketing. He describes over four-dozen cultivars and discusses blueberry growth and development, fruit production, propagation, and more. The problem of pests such as birds, nematodes, and insects and mites is addressed and strategies for control of these pests are included. An appendix provides a chart, the first of its kind, to help diagnose disorders of highbush blueberries. The chart contains descriptions and discussions of these disorders to help growers identify and treat them quickly and effectively. Appendixes also include handy tables, equivalence charts, and calculations for fast and easy reference. An overview of world production of highbush blueberries informs readers of developments in other countries. This thorough and readable book is sure to become a trusted guide for growers of highbush blueberries worldwide.

The book is international in scope and contains information useful to growers from Australia and Japan to Chile, Poland, and Finland, places where such information is often scarce, if available at all. Bursting with practical, helpful knowledge, The Highbush Blueberry and Its Management is a vital guidebook not just for professional growers, but for cooperative extension personnel and university-level small fruit researchers as well. With its readable style, it can also be used as an ancillary text at the graduate and advanced undergraduate level.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference on Blueberry Production, March 27, 2008

This review is from: The Highbush Blueberry and Its Management (Hardcover)
This is one of the three books I recommend to people who are interested in growing bluberries. This book is a well written collection of the scientific knowledge of how blueberry plants grow and their culture. Blueberries need acid soils and the author walks the reader through site selection and preparation as well as culture, pruning and pest control. This book is an excellent reference for horticulturists and commerical growers. Numerous black and white pictures, graphs and tables deliver a lot of information and even though I have read it several times, I find myself refering to this book several times a year.
Blueberries: For Growers, Gardners and Promoters is a more recent work with multiple authors and many color photos, but Dr. Gough's book is still an excellent resource with its own strengths and the two works complement each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Info, however a bit dated, August 23, 2007

The book is very informative, providing me with information I was looking for, however some of the reference material dates back several decades. I was hoping that more current methods of plant maintenance & marketing would be included, nevertheless still a wealth of information on most topics. I would recommend this to anyone interested in starting a blueberry endeavor, or even considering one, which will give you an idea of what is involved and what to expect.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have if you're into blueberries, November 13, 2008
This review is from: The Highbush Blueberry and Its Management (Hardcover)
Dr. Gough put together a great book. I have had it now for about four years, and it has helped me greatly with my 200+ plants. I have read it thoroughly onece and have read and reread portions several times. The book cites many sources, but reads rather easily, however I am a biology/chemistry teacher. For the fifty some dollars I spent on it, some color plates would be nice but I understand that such a specific book has a limited audience and that increases the cost of the printing. I wish the blueberry variety section would include more varieties and separate the southern highbush from the northern highbush fmom the half high varieties etc... The text thoroughly handles the topic of soil and pH from several angle which is an absolute must for anyone interested in keeping blueberries. There is also enough information for the hobbyist to experiment with, such as propagating their own bushes and marketing their product. The intended audience is obviously the big time grower. For the serious hobbyist or commercial grower, this is a must have text.
