Excellent EP single from back in the day, May 12, 2011
This review is from: Higher Ground / Chronic / Can't Help Falling (Audio CD)
I was casually going through my rather extensive CD collection (about 2,000 CDs or so) and I fell upon this beauty. Hadn't listened to this in AGES, and I just had to play it right then and there. UB40 used to be a band in the 80s and early 90s that I really loved, and I bought a number of their releases. This is a single/EP released from their excellent "Promises and Lies" album.
"Higher Ground" (5 tracks; 25 min.; originally released in 1993) starts off with the title track single, and what a great track it is, one of my favorite songs ever of the band. It is followed by the "Punjabi Dub" of the same song, taking on a Middle-Eastern feeling, but not so much that you wouldn't recognize the song. I kinda like it. "Chronic" is an instrumental non-album track, quite good actually. Then comes "Can't Help Falling in Love", the other big hit from the album, but here in the 12" version, just fabulous (and better than the album version in my opinion). The last track is another instrumental non-album track "Jungle Love", which I don't really care for that much. But it's a minor quibble.
Do you remember the days in the 90s when bands released singles with multiple B-sides? Bands like Oasis perfected the art, but there were many others doing it, including UB40 on this outstanding single EP. I can't believe it's been 18 years since I bought this, but I will tell you that the songs on here have aged very well. So glad I have this in my collection.
