This 1973 album was originally issued on the CTI spinoff Kudu label, for which Smith recorded a handful of sessions. Cleanly produced, as you'd expect from this period and label family, it also has a nice dollop of grit and a fine supporting cast, including George Benson, Steve Gadd, Ron Carter and Ralph McDonald and, most notably, Joe Henderson.

Hammond's organ sounds fine on the album, but the entire session benefits enormously from Henderson who, true to form, is spot on in his solos, riding the groove but injecting plenty of edgy emotion. His playing makes "Summertime/In the Ghetto" and "Big Sur Suite" highlights of the album.

As I've noted in other reviews of CTI albums, your reaction to this recording will likely be determined by your taste in jazz-oriened music. Like many efforts of the early '70s, "Higher Ground" straddles the ground between jazz, soul and R&B. Purists won't care for it, I think, but the album is stocked with good players who bring plenty of genuine feeling to the tunes, and the production values are well above average -- thanks in large part, again, to Henderson. His playing is always worth the price of admission, and this album is no exception.

All in all, a good addition to the CTI catalog and a worthy pickup if you're a fan of the label looking to cherry-pick its better releases.

There really isn't a bad moment on Johnny Hammond's "Higher Ground." It all sounds absolutely great. And what a lineup of musicians! Ron Carter, George Benson, Bob James, Steve Gadd, Ralph MacDonald, etc, etc. Since Steve Gadd is my favorite drummer and he plays on 3 of the 4 tracks here, it's easy for me to recommend this to anyone. But the one song that Gadd doesn't appear on, "Big Sur Suite", is particulary great. What a wonderful sound! Highly recommended.

Johnny Hammond Smith and his band tear through some great tunes on this cd. His style is so funky it gets me going.
