5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!, January 14, 2000
This review is from: Higher Mythology (Paperback)
This is the third book in a series of 3, and takes you back into the world of the charecter's you've come to love and know, and keeps you reading to find out what happens next. This book will have you wishing it were real...that you could go out and find an Air Sprite. It's wonderfully written, and makes a vivid impression in your mind. It's just one of those books you think about when you aren't reading, and then you can't wait to get back to it! There is kidnapping, and rescue, as well as new discoveries. I've read it many times, and had family and friends read it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Myths in the Clouds, October 22, 2010

This review is from: Higher Mythology (Paperback)
Higher Mythology (1993) is the third Fantasy novel in the Mythology series, following Mythology Abroad. The initial work in this series is Mythology 101.

In the previous volume, Michaels decided that he had made a mistake. Niall removed the curse from Keith. After coming home, Holl got permission from the Master to ask Maura to marry him.

In this novel, Keith Doyle is a red-headed student at Midwestern University. His family has Irish ancestry. He is a very persuasive talker and is very enthusiastic about the Little People. He also likes pretty girls and really likes Diane.

The Master is the headman of the various clans of Little People in Illinois. He has been teaching a small study group that includes Big People.

Holl is a Little Person in his forties, but he looks about twelve. He was the firstborn in Illinois. He is betrothed to Maura.

Maura is a Little Person. She is the daughter of the Master and is now engaged to Holl.

Diane Londen is a Health Science Major at Midwestern. She has been a member of the study group for most of the semester. She is Keith's sweetheart.

Frank Winslow is a competition balloonist. He flies Skyship Iris for fun and profit.

In this story, Holl finally marries Maura. All eighty-odd Little people and a handful of Big people attend. Keith films the whole affair, particularly the goodies awaiting consumption. Everybody enjoys the wedding and Diane has a good cry. Then they start the feast.

One guests is an old country elf. Tiron had returned with the Master and is living at the farmhouse. He creates quite a stir among the young females.

At the buffet, Keith talks with Holl. The conversation turns to the contaminated water on the farm. Keith suggests that the elves write a few letters to the editor of the local papers.

Keith meets Frank at a talk on ballooning presented at Midwestern University. Keith perceives that a hot air balloon will be perfect for contacting air sprites. When he discusses the idea with Frank, the balloonist thinks he is nuts, but enjoys his company.

A year and a day after the wedding, Keith makes a short speech to bystanders at the university from the basket of Airship Iris. The speech is cut short when the basket shifts. Derived of entertainment, many of the spectators go elsewhere.

So Keith floats up in the Iris and finds that the winds are alive. He makes friends with some aerials, but he can only converse with them at higher altitudes. They normally cannot withstand the higher pressure near the surface.

This tale brings troubles to Hollow Tree Farm. The letters to the newspapers stir up opposition to the polluters. One person is quite angry at the negative publicity and strikes back.

The aerials help the elves to win the conflict. The next installment is Advanced Mythology. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Nye fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of mythical creatures, rural politics, and stubborn young men.

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic comes back, March 5, 2009

This review is from: Higher Mythology (Paperback)
A much better book, this, the third in the MYTHOLOGY series, is a thunderous return to form and the excellence seen in the first. The travelogue element is gone as we return to the familiar grounds of the college, and many of the supporting cast that was gone from the second book is back as well, and the new additions to the cast from said second book come across as much more likable in this volume. The plot is much stronger, and the humor is back to full force as well. There are several romantic subplots, all handled well and sure to evoke happy sighs.
