Now three-quarters of the runway were left behind; the far end was expanding sideways as it drew closer, with huge snow- covered boulders beyond. Forty knots... thirty knots... The end of the runway was now only six hundred feet away, and still coming on fast... Now the plane began to bounce on the rough dirt at the end of the runway; five hundred feet... four hundred... The boulders were looming ominously ahead, like a shark's teeth; the plane was heading straight for them.
When a routine scientific mission in the Canadian Arctic goes terribly wrong and one of the men is badly hurt, his only hope for survival is to have a surgeon airlifted to the remote, deserted island where he is located. With a fierce polar cyclone closing in and the Canadian helicopters grounded due to bad weather, it is up to the rescue pilot Heather Mallory of the US Civil Air Patrol, and her husband Rick Floyd, a field surgeon in the Army, to carry out a desperate plan: they must fly in a twin-engine light airplane to the very limits of its maximum range, where Rick is to parachute to the island in high winds and perform the life-saving surgery, while Heather tries to find a nearby airfield in heavy fog and with her fuel supply nearly exhausted. Will they succeed in saving the man's life... or will they, too, end up dead?

I enjoy aviation novels and this one is presented with a well developed plot and interesting characters. The flying scenes in this adventure/suspense read are well researched and described with technical accuracy and realism. Fiction is best enjoyed when I can exercise my imagination without stretching beyond plausibility. Many of the scenarios in this book take place in the Canadian wilderness, far north of Hudson Bay, and the challenges to flying and surviving are many. As an airline pilot, I overflew this region often and was happy to be at a comfortable flight level and not battling the harsh conditions at lower altitudes. The "what ifs" that go through a pilots mind at those latitudes are the same "what ifs" that make an interesting plot for a novel. I look forward to this author's next book.
Once I started reading this novel, I couldn't put it down! The dramatic, action-packed plot kept me guessing the whole time whether Rick and Heather will rescue the scientist, or whether the whole bunch will meet a tragic end. I also really enjoyed the rich descriptive language the author used, which is not too common in today's literature. Plus, it seems to me that the author has done his research and knows what he's talking about when he writes, for example, about weather forecasting or flight operations (although, to be honest, I don't know a whole lot about these things). But most of all, I loved the characters in this book; I loved how willingly they risk their lives to serve their country and to save the lives of their fellow Americans. Their unspoken motto seems to be "All for one, one for all!" I wish more people in real life were like that -- if they were, I'm sure that all our lives would have been a lot better.
What an exciting new author! Higher Than an Eagle is a page turner. I couldn't put it down. I really cared about the characters and wanted to know how everything turned out. I was impressed with their bravery and the level of detail in this novel. Looking forward to the sequel!
