4.0 out of 5 stars This is what live is all about, July 8, 2010
This review is from: Higher Up: Live 1980 (Audio CD)
Okay, the sound quality isn't as good as most people are used to these days. That's not the point of this album- the point is great music! Basically this was a bootleg album that the band decided to release officially. The original line-up included lead vocalist/guitarist Jeff Pollard and multi-instrumentalist Bobby Campo, both of whom departed in 1982 after several albums. At this point the group underwent a radical change in it's overall sound and songwriting style. That's not to say they were worse, just very different. Higher Up represents the only real document of the original LeRoux playing live, and it is quite a good performance! On the band's own website they warn that the recording quality is a little rough, but so what? I have yet to hear sound this good when I'm standing in the middle of a crowd at an actual show (and I've been to a lot of concerts)! This is a very enjoyable disc. The song selection spans several of their earlier albums and the musicianship is first rate. If you are new to LeRoux I recommend getting their first album,'Louisiana's LeRoux', instead. That is the band at it's best. But if you like that one already then, to me, this is the next stop. Yes, the studio albums are better produced but they don't have the energy and joy that this one's got. After all, what is the point of music? To make you feel! If you want to get nit-picky about sound quality with a record this good then I think you are missing the point entirely. By the way, AOR Live is a fine disc as well, but it is mostly later material performed by a later line-up and is produced a lot more like an eighties hard rock album. To my ears it's just not The Sauce.

This is a great re-issued CD from Leroux with a nice song selection, the only bad part is the sound production, its really poor, if you want a better live album from leroux, check out their web site and order AOR LIVE. Much better concert with fantastic sound.
