Decent Collection Of Songs...,
By
This review is from: Highest Hopes: The Best of (Chi) (Audio CD)
This is a good collection of songs from the band, but there are songs they should have not left out... Like "Beauty And The Beast", "The Pharoh Sail To Orion", and "Gethsemane".
There is a really cool cover of the Pink Floyd song "High Hopes" on here... That is definatly worth checking out. If you have all thier other cds, your not missing anything here... But this is a good cd to get if you don't have any of thier stuff.

I love Nightwish, and I am glad they released a best-of compilation. However, I think it is unfortunate that to get a cheap price on the CD in North America, you have to buy the Argentinian import, or one from the EU for a higher price. There are sixteen songs in total, making this compilation a fairly complete one. There are some very good songs spanning their entire career are on the album, however a couple of my very favorites aren't on the disc. "Sacrament to Wilderness" and "Come Cover Me" are (in my opinion) the best tracks off "Oceanborn" and "Wishmaster" respectively, are not present. There are three tracks on this hits compilation that are not on the standard editions of the full-length albums. To get more of the rare tracks, one would have to buy the more expensive dual-disc edition (sold on Amazon.com for an outrageous price). Drakkar released a better compilation in Germany that includes more rare songs, and is on a single disc. This German compilation did not have any of the latest tracks off of "Once," as it was produced in 2004. An reviewer on this site wrote in saying that Amazon.com told them the disc was unavailable. While I can't check the reliability of that claim, the only store I saw that CD in was located in Europe. In other words, the better compilations are not widely available in the States, even as an import. To sum up the review, it is a sacrifice to buy the (least desirable) greatest hits compilation, but at least it has a lot of songs (and to be fair, everyone's favorite songs are different). Nightwish is an incredible band, and even a decent compilation is a great one.

If you've never experienced this bands music, this is were you should start. All the songs are very good and showcase what this band is all about. I could do however without the Pink Floyd cover at the end on the cd, but overall it's a good listen. The texture and power of their music is excellent as it flows with ease. They are a heavy rock/metal band make no mistake about that, however they are very melodic in how they approach this task. If you like chick singers belting it out, keyboard style nuances/textures, power cords through Boogie stacks, bass and drums holding in all down/together and driving it forward, than this is a must listen. The first disc is strictly music and good music, mostly their hits so to speak. The second disc is live coverage and is a nice bonus. The liner notes are ample and include the lyrics. Overall a good beginners set or a set for someone trying to thin the cd heard a little. Like most Greatest Hits packages, some stuff is missing, however overall it's a pretty decent package.

Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish Excellent music by Finland's symphonic metal band, Nightwish. Living in the U.S. we are not exposed to many of Europe's best artists and musicians. Don't miss this band. You will love them. Even if you are not a heavy metal fan, you will love this music, because it is symphonic metal. That means it's way more than metal guitars, drums and screaming vocals. Tarja, the female singer, is a trained opera singer. Toumas, the keyboardist, is a musical genius. Toumas writes the music. The bass guitarist, Marco, has what's called a "raucous" voice, but he is outstanding, and also helps compose some of the music. The lead guitarist, Empu is not only extremely talented, he's gorgeous! The drummer is the best I've ever heard! Check out Nightwish!! You will love them. They're touring the US in the Fall. Look for their new album in September.

Good for beginner fans.,

This would be a great collection for beginning fans of Nightwish. Includes my personal favorites "Wish I Had An Angel" and "Over the Hills and Far Away". Tarja has a gorgeous voice. Depressingly, they have decided that a change of vocalists is needed. For all those new to Nightwish, listen to this. Missing songs like "She is my Sin" and "Planet Hell".

I love all of the tracks on this album, though it is missing a few songs. But that`s alright, of course. Not everyone likes the same songs. For those who are new to Nightwish, this is a great way to start off. Before this came out, I usually reccomended Once, their most latest album. But now there`s an album that has Nightwish from the full nine years. This is great.

Mixed feelings always arise whenever a "best of" compilation is released. I guess in Nightwish's case, it signifies the end of an era considering the departure of Tarja a few months back. So, not much can be said about this album. We all know Nightwish's brand of ultra-symphonic Metal, and many of their gems such as "Stargazers" and "Bless The Child" are present here, while sacrificing monumental numbers like "Beauty of the beast" and wizardry-stompers like "Moondance". 16 tracks in total with 2 "new" songs consisting of a 2005 version of "Sleeping Sun" and a live version of "High Hopes", which is a Pink Floyd cover (both not that impressive). Included is a DVD with three live songs.

Best Nightwish CD out there!,

This review is from: Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish (Audio CD)
I have been listening to Nightwish since the band formed long long time ago. They have many great albums, but this one is definitely their best CD! (Because it is an accumulation of all their best songs : ))
I would rate each song separately, but since I have a midterm tomorrow, I am going to keep this short. All the songs are great : ) Some take a while to grow on you, while others are an instantaneous hit. I would say which songs I think are the best, but that is something best discovered by oneself alone. In summary, if you like orchestral metal/goth metal, this is the CD for you. Nightwish doesn't get better than this! I highly recommend this CD.

I adore this CD, it contains both peaceful, more mellow songs (Dead Boy's Poem) to stomping tunes (Wish I Had An Angel) from my favourite band, Nightwish.
However, Planet Hell, Gethsemane and She Is My Sin should have been added. Great CD for first-time Nightwish buyers.

Excellent Introduction to this great Symphonic Metal band,

If you like the previews on Amazon you will love this band. A wonderful combination of Metal's power and the melodic nature and power of symphonic music and opera.
It's a greatest hits CD so you would expect all of cuts to be excellent and you won't be disappointed. If you like this you will like all of their other CD's. If you prefer live recordings then the CD and DVD combo called "End of an Era" is also highly recommended. This group has excellent musicians combined with two singers with completely contrasting styles. The rhythm section, male vocalist and guitarist are pure Metal and the female singer is quite operatic. The keyboard player writes most of the material and does the arrangements. He is a genius. |
