4.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to the world of Hiking and Camping
First off, let me start by saying that I really like my Summit watch. It is large (some may go so far to call it HUGE) but it is surprisingly lightweight on my wrist, and quite comfortable to wear. Those with bad eyesight will STILL be able to see the easy-to-read digital readout of the time, barometric pressure, altitude and compass. The numbers are quite big, so they...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok
The watch is good for three reasons:

Altimeter is awesome.
The barometer works great.
The display is big so you can see as much as possible without pushing buttons.

Problems:
It's virtually impossible to set the alarm once it's dark -- the buttons are organized weird.
You shouldn't wear it in much water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to the world of Hiking and Camping, May 26, 2005
First off, let me start by saying that I really like my Summit watch. It is large (some may go so far to call it HUGE) but it is surprisingly lightweight on my wrist, and quite comfortable to wear. Those with bad eyesight will STILL be able to see the easy-to-read digital readout of the time, barometric pressure, altitude and compass. The numbers are quite big, so they are difficult to miss.

The altitude reading measures in increments of +/- 1 foot, which is about as good as you can get. I like that. But what I really like about the Highgear watches that I haven't seen in other brands which offer similar features, is the visual image on the face of the watch telling you what the weather conditions are or will be. No kidding, this watch will actually show you whether or not it is sunny, partly cloudy, or raining. Pretty dang nifty if you ask me. The barometric pressure reading is only a small part of predicting the weather, however after months of use, I have to say that my little watch is WAY MORE accurate than my local TV Weatherman. I'd say somewhere around 75% of the time what my watch says is exactly what the conditions actually ARE. Not bad. It's a feature I would VERY much like to have on my Suunto and Casio models with similar functions. Until then, I'll rely on my trusty (and much cheaper) Highgear Summit.

If you are considering making the purchase of a wrist watch that offers the digital compass, altitude and barometer functions, before MAKING that specific buy, do some homework and wherever possible, seek out a store where you can actually SEE the watches in person. Being able to guess the size of a particular model using a picture on the computer can possibly mess up your purchase. Find the best price, and pull the model out and actually TRY IT ON before you buy. For me, the Highgear Summit was a good purchase -- however if you would rather enjoy these same functions but in a smaller package, try the Highgear Axis, or possibly the more stylish but much more compact (and WAY MORE expensive) Suunto Observer. Either way, doing a little homework will pay off in the end. Happy hiking and I hope this helps you in your efforts to buy the right product. Good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent watch!!, March 28, 2007
This review is from: Highgear Summit Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer (Shadow) (Apparel)
I've had this watch for about a month and I love it! So far the
barometer has been right about the weather a few hours ahead. I
have not had the opportunity to take it to the mountains, which
is the main purpose for my purchase, but the big screen is easily
visible and the features are readily accessible. If you are looking
for a great outdoor watch, give Highgear a chance.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Watch" out - low quality makes it disposable, April 15, 2008

I enjoyed using this product -- until it came time to change the battery. Then I discovered how low quality the materials are in the construction of the watch. It is essentially impossible to change the battery: the soft plastic holding the battery deforms, so it is extremely difficult to open the compartment. The watch repair store wouldn't even try. In desperation, I carved out the plastic well enough to get two-screwdriver leverage to open the battery case, to replace the CR2032 battery. But even worse, then the poor construction prevented the closing of the battery case. So beware: you need to treat this watch as disposable, once the battery wears out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Scary choice for serious backcountry use..., July 19, 2008

I'm on my second Terra Summit; the first was replaced by the vendor (not Amazon) after its crystal got heavily scratched and fogged and the bearing markers for compass wore off on a single 4 day backpacking trip. This time I took it in the woods, got turned around, and soon was seriously lost because... the compass doesn't work! No matter where I pointed it, it was "SSW". This isn't a mistake I can afford to make and next trip this watch is staying home.

2.0 out of 5 stars Returned 3 times, December 27, 2007

I like this watch a great deal but have had to return it 3 times in 9 months. Each time Highgear customer service was very helpful, but they have had to replace it each time as well. It just freezes up and no buttons worked. I have twice tried new batteries, but that didn't work either (for long).

I like the watch very much and wish it was reliable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buttons are complicated, October 13, 2007

I had a Timex watch with altimeter and that was easy to use. This one the button sequence are not intuitive. The print in the manual is small and sometime confusing. It is however, more accurate that the Timex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Device - Any Problem Others Have With it Results from A Lack of Understanding, June 9, 2010
This review is from: Highgear Summit Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer (Shadow) (Apparel)
This device is absolutely outstanding and all of the ABC functions work very well, although it is large.

To those saying the bezel rotates: THIS IS A Feature, not a flaw, you can adjust the bezel so that you get the markings actually aligned.

Although the device is large, it is fine on my small wrists.

Overall a great device.

1.0 out of 5 stars nothing more than a simple watch, September 23, 2008

The watch was awesome until a month into ownership and the temp/alt/baro function stopped working and the girlfriend threw away the reciept. although i just ordered a casio pathfinder. the weather icon is nice but knowing how to read a barometer is a lot more simpler. Cheap price, cheap watch

3.0 out of 5 stars Highgears Summit watch, August 1, 2008
This review is from: Highgear Summit Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer (Shadow) (Apparel)
For the first three months it was pretty nice. The watch band eneded up breaking away from the base unit. It was too late to return it for a refund. Amazon only has a poor 30 day policy for refunds. I tried to have the watch band fixed at a local watch specialist shop. No one in my area could do it. The actual connections to the watch housing broke. I tried several shops and 4 months later it still sat on my dresser. Actually it's been a year now the watch is still running well, but telling time/temp/alt/bara from a drawer now instead of my wrist. I am sending it soon back to Highgear to either fix the watch band or replace it. Their rep has informed me that there is a 2 year warantee on the Summit. I wish Amazon would have told me that when I purchase it.
