The wild west of the 1930's at it's best.,

Not much is left of the town of Highgrade, but the story is engaging, especailly amongst those who think old ghost towns and mining history are cool! (I've visited the site, not much left but old boards and tailings!)The richness of the mine was amazing and the theft and highgrading were typical of the time. Not to mention the practice of selling mining stocks for worthless properties and the legal hurdles for anyone with a paying mine had to jump through. A great window on that period of time where the burro prospector was replaced by the automobile and when speculation and lawsuits were how more people made more money through legal action and stealing ore than any did actually mining gold! Still, the book talks of "lenses" of solid gold 6 feet in diameter! Good reading, but like most mining town stories, it ends in failure.....ore runs out and that is the end of the town. Any Nevada history, mining, or ghost town buff wil want to add this one to their library! |
