This is the first review I've written on Amazon--I just couldn't believe the author made such a major mistake and none of her editors or proofreaders caught it! At the end of "Highland Lover" she had Gregory and Ewan's brother Brian MacFingal elope with and marry Mavis Kerr. She had a rich dowry and he was a poor younger son so he pursued her boldly. Mavis had wanted to marry Gregory, but he loved Alana Murray instead. Later in "Highland Avenger", Brian (who'd remained single???) became the main character who fell in love with Arianna Murray but tried to give her up because he didn't want to marry for a rich dowry. Even his basic character changed! I've read almost everything Hannah Howell has written over the years and I've thoroughly enjoyed her books. They're imaginative, funny, and full of adventure and romance. Unfortunately, some of her later books lack chemistry, like this one. That's one of the reasons I gave it a low score. Sorry, Hannah!

An exciting romance set during 1480 Scottish times in which Brian MacFingal one of the younger sons in the large brood of the notorious MacFingal finds more than he bargains for when searching the beach for his lost cargo that is washing ashore. Upon finding the ship's captain along with some of the crew shipwrecked, their story of a forced sinking in the high seas leaves him wondering why. A discovery within the rocky shoreline by Brian's younger brother leads to two young boys and protecting the body of one beautiful young woman. Fearing the beauty is dead; Brian rushes to her side finding proof that although battered, Lady Arianna Murray Lucette is quite alive. The tale she tells sets Brian on a heroic mission to protect the trio and deliver them to safety before pursuers close at their heels, intent on their death, make an appearance. A trail of false leads through the cross-country forests and fields of Scotland challenge all of Brian's instincts to keep the enemy away, but will his instincts prove strong enough where Lady Arianna is concerned? While carrying her many scars of the past can Lady Arianna trust this handsome avenger with both her life and her heart?

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Highland Romance, June 13, 2012

When Sir Brian MacFingal, finds Arianna Murray Lucette he has no idea the trouble she will bring to him and his clan. While, they race across Scotland to get to his clan's castle, they not only encounter danger, but must fight they growing passions. 4.0 out of 5 stars strong Highlander romance, March 27, 2012
This review is from: Highland Avenger (Murrays) (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1480 off the coast of Scotland, a large ship plows into a smaller vessel. Arianna Lucette knows her vicious brother-in-law Amiel, who she believes murdered his sibling Claud and Claud's legal wife Marie Anne, and the vicious DeVeaux clan seek her two stepsons (Adelar and Michel). She and the boys use barrels to make it ashore.

Smuggler Brian MacFingal and his brothers were waiting for Captain Tillet to deliver cargo. They rescue the captain and four others and find the lads protecting Arianna. She tells him she is a Murray trying to take her husband's children to safety while an evil army comes for them. Brian directs his brothers to separately take the lads to their keep Scarglas while he escorts Arianna in order to split the adversaries into three groups. Arianna tells Brian that her husband was a bigamist as he was already married before he wed her. She cannot explain why the DeVeaux are involved. He admires her loyalty and love for someone else's children. As the enemy pursues them, they fall in love, but she was burned once and apparently abandoned by her clan so is wary of relationships.

The latest Murray Highlander romance (see Highlander Protector) is a strong entry starring two fully developed protagonists with the female lead an interesting heroine. The story line is fast-paced and filled with suspense as the enemy is like the Energizer bunny. Although some of the hero's actions are inane for an intelligent leader like their stopping for a tryst or his rejecting a scout while in peril from adversaries hunting them down, fans will appreciate the return of Arianna Murray from her horrible French "marriage".

5.0 out of 5 stars Highland Avenger, May 14, 2012
It was a great story about family, battles and love. A very seducing love story, with lots of sub stories going on. Great ending.

Review originally posted at Romancing the Book

Hannah Howell is a master of Highland Romance. With over twenty books in her backlist her novels literally span generations. Which is one of many reasons I read Mrs. Howell religiously.

Highland Avenger brings together the Murrays and the MacFingals/Camersons again. While favorite characters of before make appearances toward the end like the original old laird MacFingal, the man who tried to breed his own clan of bastards, his impertinent daughter in law Fiona and the always funny Sigmour, it was Callum from Highland Angel that made me gasp.

In Highland Angel he’s an eleven year old victim of sexual abuse and while I wanted to find out his future I knew one with him as the hero prob wouldn’t happen. Nevertheless Howell delivered beautifully and I’m thrilled to know how he fared.

And now on to our H/H. Brian MacFingal is attempting to help his clan and create his own way by organizing a trading endeavor. It’s through this he meets Lady Arianna Murray Lucette who washes up on a highland beach running from her crazy dead husband’s French family.

While Howell delivers the same romance formula she is famous for as usual the characters create something original. Arianna suffers from the cutting tongue of her deceased French husband and therefore has no confidence in passion.

Brian himself suffers with feelings of inadequacy in comparison to Arianna’s family. Nevertheless, he commits to cure her of her un-confidence concerning passion.

Readers will love Highland Avenger.

Hannah Howell has done it again. I have enjoyed each of the books in her Highland series and this one does not disappoint. A strong heroine and a completely lovable hero (even if he is a little hardheaded). Who could ask for more.

Hannah Howell delivers yet another dramatic story filled with passion and adventure. In this one, Arianna Murray Lucette is running for her life from a man who has done her wrong. In the first chapter, our heroine is attacked on a ship by her enemies and already the action is there, picking up the book and never quite relenting until the very end.

When Arianna and two young boys are washed up to a shore, Sir Brian MacFingal finds them and is quick to determine Arianna's soaked form as dead. However, it takes more than an attack and a harsh battering of water to break her.
I thought that the character development for Arianna and Brian were excellent. It's clear that Howell is a master storyteller. She is damn good at what she does and the world she has built with the Murrays and MacFingals grow with each book.

I think perhaps the best part of the book is the details that Howell puts in. Everything is so vividly described, it almost feels as if you are living in the moment. This is a true testament to the quality work Howell does. I'm not surprised that there this series is still going strong. Howell continues to grab readers attentions with a world that keeps them guessing and falling in love. HIGHLAND AVENGER is no exception. This book is the perfect escape for historical romance fans.
