I feel that I must rebut the last review. First of all...it was snowing when she retrieved the king which would have covered any tracks that showed where he had gone. As far as the searchers are concerned, I just assumed that they had been out all night trying to find him, duh! Not unreasonable at all. I appreciate the fact that the author assumes that I have a brain and can think for myself instead of telling about every single step the characters took.
I understand that there was a danger from wolves and he could have froze to death in the harsh Highlands winter. The author has apparently done her research.
Lastly, it was not unheard of for the nobles to wed complete strangers. It was a contract that was usually negotiated between the two parties. I found the story to be true to form for the time period and a pleasant short read.

I found this book to contain an interesting, albeit brief story. The book is written in a kind of faux gealic/olde english style. It didn't take me long to get used to the unique language and enjoy the story. If you enjoy love stories that occur in far-away places and feature Knights, Kings and Earls, I would recommend this read.

The story involves a poor widow, Meghan, who was abused by her husband, who was a handsome knight. She becomes a recluse with her two kids in a remote part of the woods. Unbeknownst to her, she and her kids find the king who's been injured and he spends the night in her hut. The next day his entourage arrives outside her home. Why so late? The reader is not enlightened, and one would think that they would have searched through the night for a king???Anyway, the king wants to reward Meghan and her two kids for saving his life. I guess, he could have been eaten by wolves had he been left outside, which is another reason that I wonder why his men didn't keep looking for him...Anyway, he thinks of his cousin, the earl, who needs a wife and believes this widow he's known for less than 24 hours would be perfect for him. He sends his cousin out, in disguise, to take a look at her and see if he wants to marry her. Of course, he does...
Needless to say, this story felt contrived. The only bright spot, was the little girl, Mary, who has some cute moments, but I would not recommend this overall.

Highland Christmas is a story about love, compassion, kindness and trust. Megan is a widow (abused by her late husband), raising her children to be decent and not bitter. She, however still struggles with trusting men. Conner comes along, wanting to marry Megan. He has won the love of her children, but convincing Megan of his devotion takes more time.
It's a believable story for the character development; their backgrounds, feelings and reactions to life's issues. Highland Christmas can easily be told in a contemporary setting. It is timeless and well told.
I really enjoy books that do not take days and days to read.

More About the Author

I was born in a small town in Illinois to a broken home. As soon as I learned how to read I, basically, moved into our local library. I always enjoyed escaping to another world rather than live in mine. When I was old enough to be on my own I became a nomad and haven't stopped traveling since.
I have been married for twenty-eight years to the same man although we've been together for thirty-three. He is my best friend and thoroughly understanding of my need to see what's on the other side of the hill. I couldn't ask for more. My three kids are grown and living their own lives now. So it's just me, my hubby and three dogs, living down here in Alabama.
I am new to the writing world. I've always escaped to someone else's but I decided to try creating my own. My fondest wish is to take someone else out of their hectic life and let them visit the world I would have. Hopefully, they might wish to live there as well.
I chose Scotland as my favorite country simply because of their endless struggles against their enemies even knowing it was probably hopeless. They never gave up through it all...they persevered to hold on to their freedom at all cost.
When I researched my genealogy a few years back, I found through my grandparents a direct line to Robert The Bruce with a connecting line going back through King David to Malcolm III. I have traced these lines clear back to the Picts, Vikings and Ireland. These were all grandparents that I am very proud of. Since then I have continued researching the history and times that they lived in. I hope some of it reflects in my stories.
Anyway, I just want to say...welcome to my world.
